port and polish.. good or bad idea?
quick question regarding port and polish job..
im currently having my valves re sealed and grinded on my d16y5 head.. the shop that is doing it is a fairly reputable shop.. and just out of curiosity i questioned him on what a p&p job would run me, and he said for the valve job and full port and polish it would run me around 400 range..
so now my question is, would it be worth it to get the head ported and polished on a stock y5 with a few minor bolt ons i.e. intake, exahust, msd ignition.. few other minor things??
what do you guys think?
also the car is used as a daily driver to get back and forth to school.. but could def use a little more power

if u plan on doin more to the motor, u might get a slight increase.. but not like you would get from a nice shot of nitrous or something...
i'd save ur money, especially if u ever plan on swapping

yeah if you are even considering swapping i would hold off until your sure that you wanna stay sohc but if you are, port n polish is a good idea if you want that extra power!

port and polish really only goes good with a cam or other internals that make the engine flow better thats when u would see the difference...as of now maybe a lil difference

YOu want to be VERY careful when you have folks P&P your head. Alot of buddy *** shops just hog out the ports and then polish them.....bigger doesn't always translate to higher flow numbers. As for gains....yeah you will get good gains no matter what kind of setup you are running...but don't expect miracles.

wtf? Damm newbs!!
if the mechanic already disassembled your head why not add a cam instead of pnp even it will help if u do both but u can afford one only go with a aftermarket cam.

never really looked into cams...
can anybody suggest a few to look into for a basically stock y5 motor??
and what kind of power gains could i expect to see out of a cam compared to a p&p job?
