Default Poor gas milage

My recently purchased 1996 Honda Civic EX Coupe (D16Y8) is giving me some really bad gas milage...I'm lucky to get 150miles on a tank...probably 160 if I really push it. Shouldn't I be getting at least 200miles on a tank?

I did have a problem with losing compression due to a warped head gasket (darn u overheating!!). The mechanic fixed that, cleaned out my whole system, changed the spark plugs and wires etc etc. I have no idea what would cause this low gas milage, any ideas?

p.s. my IACV is bad (car idles at like 200rpm and occationally bursts to 1500rpm) but I doubt that has anything to do with it....

p.s.s. if anyone has an IACV for sale and is willing to ship to Barbados please let me know

I have the same problem on my 93 civic ex and I've been told a bad O2 sensor could be the problem. Not 100% sure though.

It could be your PVC valve, fuel filter,or o2 sensor. Try replacing those.

My crx was getting 50 miles to the tank, believe it or not. It was horrible.

Damn 180 miles, if only I could be that lucky. I fill my tank once a day, if I'm lucky I can stretch it to a day and a half.

The overheating motor could have definately damaged your 02 sensor. Do any of you have any CELs on?

I get close to 400 miles a tank with my BOOSTED 97 hatch, so theres no way you should be getting less than half that.

Damn good point Chad. I'm putting in about 10 gallons every time I go close to 400.

I fill it up, then I go like 180 miles, then I go fill up, and I put like 8.5 or more gallons in my car.. so i know its getting crappy mileage.

Ouch my 89 mustang gt got better gas mileage than that. I get 350 in town out of my 93 Civic dx with over 205,000 miles on it. Definetly check that o2 sensor, i think I picked up about 35 to 50 miles to the tank when I replaced mine when it was going bad. I think someone else said to check your fuel filter, and also your air filter. You may also check your timing, it may help.

well i've had TWO hondas so far and both of the Gauges were off.... so all i ever do is say i put 10 bucks in thats like 5.5 gallons and i figure for 25 miles to the gallon at the least so at the least i'm lookin at like 140 miles then i just drive it say... 20-30 more miles then that .... (at least thats what i've been doing latly cause i havn't had the money to just fill the car up)

Check your timing. I think the previous owner swapped in a CX gastank. Even when the needle is below the Empty line, I can NEVER put more than 8.8 gallons in the tank WITH filling it to the top. I only get 200-220 miles per tank. This tank, only 180. I do believe my timing is off due to the fact that I ping from 3,000-4,000 RPM and I bog every now and then.

Check the 02 sensor that usually causes bad gas mileage?

I get 425 to a tank in my del sol, which is like 10.3 gallons when on E so I guess that equates to 41.26 MPG, Stock D16z6 Manual Tranny Good gas mileage is a sign of good compression right?

You guys should be getting at least 320 miles from one tank under normal driving conditions.

First thing to check is driving style.

If things don't really improve, start checking the small things first. Get an oil change, check/replace spark plugs, check fuel filter, check air filter.

If the problem persists, you probably have more underlying issues with the car. Does it burn oil? Does it have a tendency to overheat?

Tuned it myself. You decided if you think I did a good job.
