Poor Fuel Economy on Y8: Replace Oxygen Sensor?
1998 Civic EX w/115,000 miles on it.
- New air filter
- New plugs
- Cap/Rotor done at 90,000
- Tires inflated properly
- New fuel filter
My wife's getting about 21-24 mpg city (mostly city miles lately).
The car does not have a CEL on. However, would replacing the O2 sensor increase fuel economy? If so, which O2 sensor would be replaced (or both)?

Replacing the O2 sensor can help with the mileage, as long as the old one is bad.
Test the primary sensor (first one from the engine) and make sure the voltage is switching back and forth.

Thats about what I would get driving around town (no freeway) I was a pretty aggressive with the throttle.
What are the driving habits of you wife.
there is a significant difference between driving 65 and 80 MPH on the freeway.
also, if she accelerates fast in stop and go traffic this will cause a major difference.
have her drive for one tank like an old lady. See if there is a significant difference.

She drives 6-7 miles a day. One major up-hill section, too. She's tried the old-lady thing, and is able to get about 24 mpg. On bad tanks, it's more like 21. I suppose I could switch cars with her for a week or so and see if my commute would net better results. We used to consistantly get 34+ mpg on the highway with the car until she got the new in-city job.

my gf's 98 ex is getting about the same mpg, she has a cel which i believe is for the cat and o2 sensor.

Is it an automatic? They get terrible in-city mileage from what I've seen.
Portland, and that portion of Oregon in general, is pretty hilly (from what I've seen there on limited instances).
If it's all city driving I would only HOPE to get high 20's, especially if you were only getting 34mpg on the highway!

Yes, it's hilly, but there's really only one major climb. I'd be happy with 27-29 mpg city. My Toyota Yaris gets 32 combined; I believe the Civic is EPA rated very similarly.
Also forgot to add that it has a brand-new OE Honda fuel filter (i.e. five days old). We'll see if that has an effect.
