Poor Fuel Economy, EM1 With JDM B18c Swap ?
Heya folks,
Maybe you can help me out here. At the moment I am running a stock B18c motor in my EM1, The tank on refils takes approximatly 40-45 litres and I calculate returns around 28.8 mpg which is motorway and round tonw driving ...
Firstly anybody else know if this is normal ? It works out approximatly 250 miles per tank and I am running 97 octane fuel.
Secondly, what can I do to improvet his if anything ? I could do with getting a little extra bang per buck, and at the moment this is really killing me !
Let me know what you think folks,
- Prob

where the hell you get 97 octane?..well, you don't have to run that high, 93 is good enough. Do rotors and cap change, it'll probably help a little. In my em1, i get about the same the same mpg as you.

28.8 mpg is horrible to you? I filled up last night and got 25.6 mpg with a stock b16a EM1.

I live in the UK so 97 octane is quite common around here. I am running a JDM ecu. Surely I should be getting better fuel economy with a higher octane fuel ?
I shall maybe look at plugs and dizzy if things carry on.

your problem is probably with your final drive ratio, although a gsr is a little longer than a b16. my hatch with a b16 gets terrible mileage but i have LSD too. good luck on that one

Get a timing light and check your ignition timing. You should have it set between 16-17 degrees advance for better fuel economy. Also check to make sure you're not running too rich, and get an FPR if necessary.
Get a new air filter, new O2 sensor, unclog your cat, etc etc.. basic tune-up stuff.

I'd be happy as a pig in **** with that octane and gas mileage. Don't go spending money on new distributor and plugs, you most likely don't need them.

No, you surely wouldn't.
28+ mpg is decent for a B18C.
Aside from a general tune-up (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, set valve clearance, set timing, can of fuel injector cleaner), how many miles are on the motor? O2 sensors do have a service interval - 75k-90k miles. Have you checked your tire pressure and alignment lately?
But don't run higher octane fuel than what is needed - that's just pissing money away.

higher octane doesn't get you better fuel economy dude...or else everyone over here would be running premium. Like the other person said, make sure you're not running too rich, a b16 doesn't need that high of a octane, just get whats recommended over there

Re: Poor Fuel Economy, EM1 With JDM B18c Swap ? (vancoland)
My garage recommended I run 97 octane as JDM engines are (apparently) designed to use the higher octane (my friends imprezza was at least, it melted a piston on standard 95 octane stuff)
More reading coming up.
