You'll have to start with a grit that will actually remove the scratches - 400 or lower number. Use the 400 and sand until you get it really smooth. Do a test buff with something like 3m marine aluminum restorer. If you see no scratches, move on to 600, then 800, then 1500. Then buff again with the 3m marine aluminum restorer. Then wetsand with the 1500 for more bling than you can shake a stick at - then buff with the 3m al resto again. Put on some mother's aluminum polish and you will be BLIND!

Like the guy said above me. Thats about the way to go. I also recomend you trying a product called BLue Magic metal polish. I use it on my bike frame and it works wonders. Happy polishing.
