Default Plugs and wires

Well i think its time i replaced mine.

What are the best wires and plugs?
I used to have some reactive wires on my old civic that gave out 3 times the spark as normal wires. Any one got any good recommendations?

NGK plugs huh?

Any body about the wires? Ever used performance ones? Notice a difference?

-i know this may sound out of order....but i have never experienced any issues with either of these products. NGK part availability was out of the question for me at the time, never had any issues using bosch/accel. same with FRAM oil filters.....never an issue. silly people and their HAMP filters and NGK this and that.....

-bosch platnium 4030: $1.89ea w/the correct gap of .44!
alot of people here scream of poor performance using ANYTHING made by bosch, use the correct gap and they work fine. they are the cheapest platnium available, change every 10,000 miles or so. they're cheap enough.

-accel thundersport wires 7913: $52.00 (pep boys only carries yellow)
8mm wires, lifetime warranty, tight/custom fit. i've gotten about 4 years out of one set before.

-cap, rotor.....both should be changed as well, at the same time. use dielectric grease on all connections and the 4 posts inside distributor cap (for RF suppression).

not that it's gonna make a difference, but i'd like to point out that no, they aren't the right gap.
actually, the correct gap is .043 (EDIT: forgot a decimal place)

"cheapest" is right though... they are cheap, in a literal sense.

OP: don't use bosch or platinums, or iridium either.

plain ol' OEM NGK V-power is what's best for the engine, and it's $8 for a box of 4.

NGK and nology are probably the best wires too.

the gap has to do with the engine, not the plug.

-the gap has to do with the electrical output/voltage of the coil/distributor. the larger gap will give a "hotter/bigger" spark which will produce a COMPLETE ignition burn of the air/fuel mixture. with the self cleaning platinum tip, theoretically the gap will not change with use. the metal part may erode away, but the platinum tip/ceramic core will not wear like a copper plug.

-i really believe the engineers over at bosch have it right, it is OE certified. meaning honda thinks its okay for use in their motors at that specific gap. how about you argue with them and tell them they are wrong? both honda and bosch.

-i have never had any problems. not one. and at $1.89.....same price as copper core NGK's, so what's the argument?

My point was that it's not the correct gap. It's close enough to not matter. However, it's still not the correct gap and that's just what i'm saying.

And what you're saying about the plug still doesn't make the .44 gap the right gap for the bosch plug. You don't want the plug to run hotter, you want it to run how the engine is designed to handle.

You know why they cost the same as NGK copper cores? Because the Bosch Platinum plugs are cheaply made.

Here's one reason not to get Bosch spark plugs. This "could" happen.

well from my experience I can tell you guys bosch platiniums suck, there crap!

I had them and was told they were pregapped and needed no attention, installed them and they caused a funny gas smell, poor power, poor mpg and a missfire, went from them to the cheapest set of ngks and the car was wayyy beter, I also used ngk iridiums later on when I did a tune-up, but like the guy above said noticed no difference whatsoever, though I remember an article about this in a magazine i think importtuner where they gained 1% power off accell wires vs stock and 2.5% power with iridium ngk's over regular ngk's, they also said the difference should be accounted for in % not hp,

-could happen with any plug, NGK included. products DO fail from time to time, **** happens.

-say you have some fancy MSD setup which produces more spark energy....do you run the factory spec for the gap? say your motor is turbochaged with mad boost? do you tighten up the gap due to blow-out?

-its all relative. again, i have never experienced any issues with either product mentioned. with years of use. i must be just lucky then.

I wouldnt wanna **** talk and trash a brands reputation, but honest to god the problem with the bosch was on a completely stock d15b7, not even an intake was on the car at that moment due to the fact that I had just bought my car from an mature driver and I myself had no experience or money to tune yet, I needed a tune-up in order to pass emissions so I bought those plugs thinking they would perform better through the test,I did pass, but all the problems above occured within days after and I went back to replace them, talked to customer care and had a new set given to me, and guess what they too failed, paid for a set of ngk's and all problems stoped right away. I do believe that either there product engineering is horrible or that they had the pregap gaped wrong.

So i guess the NGK plugs are the way to go then.

About wires now. \
It has been a while since i have thought about this.
What is the normal stock gauge on wires? What is the gauge on the performance wires? A smaller number is a bigger/better gauge correct? =ing more spark to the plugs?

NGK also, I've had my current set of wires on for almost 5 years and no problems at all.

Am i correct about the mm size? Smaller number is better?
I found some 10.5mm and some 7mm

larger number means they're bigger.

the number is the diameter of the wire in mm

I don't know if it's true or not, but I think I remember reading somewhere that 10.5 is overkill and could be not that great. But then again, if they're NGK 10.5mm wires I'd trust NGK more than I trust what i've heard.

I'm pretty sure 8.5mm is the optimal size.

I think my stock wires are 7mm (at least that's what I remember reading on them)

I just got some NGK V-Power yesterday for my used d16y8 motor swap, used NGK Iridiums in previous motor but it threw a rod, beware iridium! (Yes I'm joking.)
I'm also using the blue NGK wires, but you really do not need them. Find cheap NGK/Denso wires. I got them because some others I tried fit like crap and actually broke off onto the spark plug (I'm looking at you Bosch... and thanks for showing your metal, O'Reilly.)
