I'm changing the gasket on my valve cover...and the stud is stripped... how do i replace the stud? (2000 Si b16) Its the outter ones i'll post up pix 2night. Is t here a special tool to take this bolt off? thanks

Yup, I'm pretty sure it's a deep 12mm socket.

I dont think you understand wut im trying to describe. Let me post up pix of the stud.


I took off the valve cover to replace all the gasket to fel-pro.


The top part is stripped... so when i put the valve cover on... oil leaks out.
so i tried to replace the stud... using a 12mm wrench... i stripped the bottom part........



So that is my problem. I really need help on this. I called HONDA dealer to ask for the stud... only 5$ a piece.. Now the taking off part is the BIG problem...

I asked some people at work 2day... and they said to "drill a hole into the stud " and pull it out......................................... DIDn't quite understand that. Can some1 help me and show me some trick that a NOOB/common person without alot of tools can do? Thanks!

agreed. It wont matter if you scar it up since you are replacing it. what type of wrench are you using? that shouldnt have been a problem to get off of there. Not doubting your abilities... just curious.

No problem. I used a 12 mm stanley wrench... i guess even after trying to clean the oil off... it was still slippery. I'm trying to use a vice grip to unbolt it... but soo far.. only made it worse... any ideas? thanks

grab it tight as **** just around the round portion of the shaft of the stud. It has to come out then. Those arent even that tight really.

Ha... tried all... the stud is worse now...it got stripped even worse...
Man.. i think this is hopeless... cant get it out..

if you have a grinder even try grinding either side of the stud to make it flush then you would be able to get a good grip with a vice.....thats all i can think of for now, might work..if not its a crap stud anyways

Damn... i'm doing that right now... but soo far... no luck..its stuck on the head!! damn it!! I wonder if a shop has any other ways to taking it off....

Be careful. If you F up that bearing cap, it'll be new head time. Those caps are machined to match the head. I hope you're not dropping aluminum/steel shavings into the engine while you're doing this.

I find it difficult to believe something like that, threaded into aluminum is that tight. In my head, they came right out. From the looks of the stud, it doesn't look like your 12 fit very well.

Another option is to see if an SAE socket is close and hammer it onto the stud for removal. Shops do have special stud removal tools that'll grab the shaft of the stud.

Just man up and grab those vice grips put them on as tight as you can, then take them off tightn them up some me get one of your buddies to help you lock them down

If you can still get a socket on there get a 6 POINT 12mm and hammer it on. Or a 6 point 12mm wrench. Using a 12 point now will just strip it more.

These studs are not tightened very tight, i suggest if the socket wont fit get a bigger set of vise grips, or bring a buddy over who knows what he is doing. You can have that stud out of there in 2 min with a small chisel or punch and a hammer.

hammer a 12 pt 11mm on there. That's what I was taught to do at the shop I worked at. It almost always works....if not hit it with an air hammer.

Obviously it looks like it's stripped top and bottom guys..anyways, if it's going to be changed anyways just put some vice grips on it and tighten the **** out of em and rip R loose, lol if you don't got any VG's just borrow some from a friend.

i wish when **** broke on my cars it was this ez of a fix...

u have like 600 options to get this out, personally i would have just hammered a 6pt 11mm onto it already and called it a day.

in most cases i would def. go with the smaller 12pt socket and a hammer, but in this case i would worry about breaking the rocker assembly since its aluminum and important.

the best way to prevent this next time is to find a Mac man or Snap-on man and buy some of his best sockets and wrenches. i know Mac has a set that is guaranteed not to strip bolts. it's expensive but it's worth the pain it saves you as i am sure you are familiar with by now.
