Wondering if i need to get a new muffler? I drive a 98 civic lx, tailpipe was rusted, and fell off, center box part of muffler was still in tact, was jus running loud, and idling really rough, sometimes close to 1000 rpms and rattled in idle, but a few days ago i noticed a rattle while driving. Deciding to give it a quick glance before heading into work, and it appears that the rest of the muffler is lose, and tipped more forward now? I assume its the muffler, although someone at work mentioned catalytic converter, which im hoping it is not lol. Can you please help....

your converter is on the manifold. very unlikely that it is the problem.

you just need new muffler and not catalytic converter

You should probably replace from the front pipe back. The converter, as noted, is in front of the engine. Then it goes to a pipe which turns under the engine and goes back to about the firewall. This pipe lasts a long time, sometimes the life of the car. The center pipe, or "B" pipe, goes from the firewall to about the back wheel. Finally there is a back section, which includes the muffler. Usually when the muffler and nearby pipes rust out, the B pipe will not be far behind them.
