Could be one of 2 things. Does it look like the oil is spraying all over the place or is it just in one place leaking out?

Could be number 17 (if not spraying)

Look on the block where the flywheel would be and you will see a little gasket, thats my guess.

Remove the transmission. Disassemble it. Replace the seal. Reassemble. Reinstall.

Would he really need to pull the tranny to remove the boot/seal (number 17) Couldnt he just pull it out with plyers and hammer a new one in?

I suppose that would depend on the load placed on the shift select lever and the clearances he has to work with. Ideally I would say you should remove and disassemble the unit. I have replaced things like crank seals with the engine still in the car, so I won't say it won't work. It just takes a little more skill then normal. Then again, so does transmission disassembly.

Do whichever your comfortable with.

Oh you mean pull it just so its easier for him, but not a need to right? I thought you were saying you need to remove it to get that off.
