Default please help! ticking under load from d16z6

d16z6

ticking under load, starting around 2800 rpm. mechanic has been unable to locate noise. the ticking is quiet, and has been doing it unchanged for nearly a 1000 miles now. the ticking goes away immediately if i put in the clutch or step off the gas. the ticking isn't there at idle.

would valves or injectors tick only under load and not at idle?

and the big question:
could this be anything other than bottom end noise?

sounds like it could be an exhaust leak?

That's what it sounds like. Maybe its time for a new fuel filter?

yea my car ticks because of my zex cam, but it does it at idle too so i'm guessing its not your valve's.

I'd go ahead and check your valve clearance. If it's in spec you probably are hearing some knock.

it's not detonation, my mechanics would have picked up on that. it's also definitely a tick and not a ping.

the only thing i can think of is to try and simulate the conditions that cause the noise and at the same time isolate where the sound is comming from. easier said than done i know. two possible ways, a chassis dyno wich some garages do have but instead of using them to measure hp and tq they use for emisions testing or diagnostic test where the drive train needs to be moving or loaded like yours. you may not be able to find or afford this. another way of doing something near the same (but with more issues as far as safety) thing would be to get the front wheels off the ground and the car securely on jack stands. then you could put the car in gear and use the brakes to load the engine while giving it gas. someone could be at the front of the car and maybe pinpoint the are the sound is comming from. if you choose to do this please, please, please be carefull

It could also be your valves due to your timing being off. I don't hear about that cause often but it has happened.

This would be my guess. I have the same problem. Only happened when I installed an SC. Guess more airflow has finally found another way out of my old exhaust.[

wow. i never even figured exhaust could make a ticking sound.

would this only be a leak from the exhaust manifold gasket, or could i be anywhere in the system?

could it also account for a rough idle?

finally, if it's not an exhaust leak, what are my other possabilities?

I have the same sound And I replaced exhaust gaskets only to still have it there. The ticking did sound like a pinhole in the exhaust but the tone did not change with RPM's. I just adjusted valves a couple months ago. I put my ear by the motor and revved and the injectors were not making excessive noise. Like you the noise is most apparent under a load, and is not noticible at low RPM. I would like to figure this out, car sounds like *** from the outside!!

I'm GOING through the same exact problem. I don't hear the tick noise at idle, but I hear it once I put the car under slight load. The tick gets louder as I put more of a load. No smoke is coming out, no coolant loss, no smoke! The noise does make my car sounds like ***. I highly doubt it would be detonation because I recently had my car nicely tuned and there is no pinging sound. Some help would be most appreciated. Thanks

I get this noise too, and my wife's Concerto although we don't have that car anymore. Could it be injectors or tappets? I'd really like to eliminate this noise! Has only started happening recently (since about 120,000km) on mine.
