Re: please help! smog questions. (gizzerhatch)
You might just need the ECU. I would put it in, then run the car for a couple of days.
Make sure the timing is correct.
Might want to run some fuel inj cleaner thru it then put fresh gas in for the test.
Run tires at 35psi
Have you been to the ref yet and had the car tested? What did he tell you?
And well I would say show us the numbers but you need the correct ECU in the car and then do a test and post the results and I will see if I can recommend some things.

Seafoam it, set timing, use the proper octane gas, change spark plugs, air filter, etc. Fail it first and see whats causing it to fail. I know for civics, certain D motors didn't come with EGR valves in Japan while the US ones had it for emissions.

yes i have been once but i was using the jdm p72 and i passed the 25 mph but failed the 15 mph horrible my nox was like 1608 i believe and it should be 760 i believe. it just sucks because my tags are so overdue i cant even drive the car till i get it reffered.
what would running my tires at 35psi do different?
please send more help and info my way!! its much appreciated!

Re: please help! smog questions. (gizzerhatch)
okay so i went to the referee again today and i failed again but worse this time.
my first results were
%CO2 %02 HC (PPM) CO (%) NO (PMM)
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS MAX AVE MEAS
15MPH l 1917 l 14.5 l 0.5 l 89 l 21 l 158 l 0.53 l 0.06 l 0.55 l 708 l 150 l 1617 l FAIL

okay so this is with a jdm p72 ecu and running 100 fuel
%CO2 %02 HC (PPM) CO (%) NO (PMM)
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX AVE GP MAX GP MEAS
15MPH l 1992 l 14.4 l 0.7 l 89 l 277 l 145 l 0.53 l 0.06 l 2.03 l 708 l 1944 l 2469 lGROSS POLLUTER

and this test was with my usdm p72 and just 91 fuel okay i guess i should use 100 octane again but i dont know what else i could do to help bring down the NO.
PLEASE!!! any have any tips?!

Re: please help! smog questions. (eskerley)
OK, here is what I would try for the next test.
I believe you cat is on it's way out because of the left over O2 unless you have an exhaust leak. Your HC and Nox are up usually it is one or the other which also points to the cat, So a cat is possible.
Timing - set it to spec or up to 2 degrees retarded. This is to lower Nox.
Gas - Try to run 87 with the lower timing setting. 87 octane burns easier and cooler. Both of these will lower your Nox.
Might be an O2 sensor also. If the O2 sensor is not switching correctly the cat will not be able to use the O2 to teardown the HC's and Nox.
So in all check or replace the O2 sensor, set the timing, run 87 and try the test again. If the numbers are still up then it is new cat time.
And the tire pressure at 35 will decrease drag on the rollers.

Re: please help! smog questions. (gizzerhatch)
Most of my friends had the same problem, you have a weak cat. I put on a brand new one before I went to ref and passed with no problems. I don't know about the ref's in your area but the one's in San Diego will warm up the car (rev engine at 3k rpm for a few minutes) before they start the test. You should ask the ref if they would do that.

Re: please help! smog questions. (thesmogman)
yeah my dad was saying it doesn't look like the O2 sensor is working properly... but shitty thing is i just put on a new cat maybe 4,000 miles ago... and the ref was pretty cool he checked my timing for me and said it was fine. my father also thinks we should test out the cat and see how efficient it is working.
we are planning on adjusting the valves getting a new 02 and ill try to retard the timing 2 degrees and run some 87.
if anyone has anymore tips it is greatly appreciated!!
ill keep you posted.

oh and yes the ref warmed up my car and he tested it twice for me just because he wanted to see it pass. he is a really cool guy.

Re: please help! smog questions. (gizzerhatch)
okay i tested again today and still no pass but i did better i am at least passing the 25 this time.
%CO2 %02 HC (PPM) CO (%) NO (PMM)
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEA . MAX GP MEAS
15MPH l 2061 l 14.4 l 0.3 l 89 l 277 l 136 l 0.53 l 2.03 l 0.62 l 708 l 1944 l 2136 lGROSS POLLUTER
25MPH l 2361 l 15.0 l 0.0 l 54 l 227 l 37 l 0.51 l 2.01 l 0.22 l 746 l 1744 l 742 l PASS
Okay this is with the new O2 sensor and the tire pressure at 35 psi.
i think i need to the stock GSR three-way cat.
any suggestions?

Re: (FTP racing)
Have you rode a bicycle with low tires then filled them up. The higher pressure decreases the rolling drag. With more drag you are increasing the load on the vehicle. At 15mph during the test the machine add's a load equal to 50% of the vehicles weight. In simple terms it duplicates driving up a hill let's say with a 5% grade. However with lower tire pressure it would make the hill out be a 6% grade.
So with higher tire pressure you decrease the load on the motor when testing.
The lesser of a load equals less output you get from the exhaust.

well its funny i tried your suggestions on my BAR 97 dyno AT work and there is no diff. in tail pipe emissions, and if there was it was like 1ppm..so ya..good try!

GIZZERHATCH, what i see from the readings is that the cat might be weak, i mean you changed everything possible, those car really don't have an other emission control components. If it was my car i'd replace the cat. just my 2 cents!

Re: (FTP racing)
C'mon at what speed and what tire pressures?
Drop them down to 20psi and try it. And with a load, not free-wheeling. I am not saying that this will drop it down a hundred PPM's but it will drop it a few.
If he was close it might just make a difference. I am absolutely positive that it does drop it a few.
And for the OP, Look at the O2 left over at your 15mph .3. At 25 it is 0.0
I would say he isn't pre-conditioning it well enough or like was said you cat just isn't up to par.
Have you taken the car on a long drive? To clean the oxidation out the cat needs to get hot and stay hot for a while. If you haven't driven for a while drive it for 75 - 100miles to clean it up and stay in the upper rpm range say above 3500rpm. This might work and get you through but then again it might not.
