Default Please help with over heating problem!!!

I haven't drivine my car for 9 months, and once in awhile the temp gets really hot, then drops, and sometimes it will just fluctuate a little. It's a 94 si...I had the same problem in my truck, the temp would get REALLY hot, then drop down to normal and be fine...is thismost likely my stat!? Thats what I'm looking at...is there any other possibilities...the H2O pump is only about 1 1/2 years old. Thanks a lot...

does your fan turn on? when does the temp rises and fall?
check fan first, if it still works you might wanna check the thermostat, correct me if i'm wrong guys.....

actually, my fan stopped working, but I hooked up a switch to it, and I leave it on around town....I was driving home tonight at about 1,500 revs in 5th gear...and the temp rose to about 1/2 way, so I downed into 4th- to get the engine spinning and water pump faster, and my temp fell, it's weird like that. I was thinking that the high revs help open the stat. I'm going to go by a new one tomorrow, and check my old one first before replacing...somebody said somethin about taking out the stat!!! Is this crazy or shouldn't it mater...it's 90 degree heat right now!! Thanks
