Please help!! D16z6 breaks up across all rpm.
First time post. I've scoured this site for days looking for the answer but can't get a clear solution. I have a stock as a rock 93 civix si d16z6. The symptoms are as follows:no cel. stumbles on start up. But then catches it's self. At idle sounds like a missfire but still idles smooth except for a slight hic up. At half throttle or more it breaks up. Bucks and snorts but sometimes smooths out if ya backnoff the throttle. This happens across the rpm range. But mostly under half throtle it more or up hills in any gear. What I've done to diagnose. Cap rotor plugs wires fuel filter all have been changed. Checked the fuel pressure regulator. Checked injectors for proper pulse. Cleaned the iac and fast idle and throtlebody of carbon. Checked the pcv. Exhaust is not clogged. Unpuging the o2 map and tps illumintaes the cel but no improvement. Don't know if I should pull the dizzy and test that. Just want some feedback before I get into it. Any thing y'all can do to help is appreciated.

Your cheapest next-step would be fuel injector cleaner. You already covered all the obvious ones: rotor, cap, wires, fuel filter, spark plugs.
The fact that its misfiring makes me think its something spark-related though.

Ronj thanks! I see you post up here all the time and your sound reasoningrid in line. I think I found the tests for the coil and the ignitor. But the mechanical advance I don't know how to check. First time in a Honda dizzy. Also a link to those coil and ignitor test would be fantastic. Hard to get online from a phone. Is there a reference for the spec on those sensors. The cars got 202000 miles. So I'm sure somethin is amiss somewhere. Thanks again!! Y'all are savin my wallet on this one!!

It's it possible for the motor to jump in mechanical timing? Wouldn't the cog timing belt prevent that?

Re: Please help!! D16z6 breaks up across all rpm.
So the coil appears to be out of spec. However I will have the module/ignitor tested tonight. The coil was showing 3.0 something ohms resistance and the secondary was showing to be in spec at 13000 ohms But it was sporadic. The reading would come and go. Very hard to get a clean read from the secondary. What y'all think?

Is it a possablity that either the coil killed the ignition mod/ ignitor? Or vice versa would a bad mod/ignitor kill th coil. And no luck on finding anyone to test the module. Honda is my last resort and I'm sure they won't do it for free. Input appreciated

How many different auto parts stores did you call about igniter unit testing? Many of the large chains offer this service. Nonetheless, you can start by replacing the coil because you know that it is bad.

Christ advanced auto, napa, and a local foreign car parts store. Haven't tried auto zone yet. My only worry is if the module is bad and I've bought a coil now with the module I could almost get a remanufactured dizzy. Should I just crack down and buy a dizzy?

Re: Please help!! D16z6 breaks up across all rpm.
So now I got a new symptom. The frigging tach needle jumps all over when I'm at a steady cruise. The actual engine rpm doesn't change. I may be mistaken but doesn't the ignition module "interact" with the tach in some way. This is driving me nuts any help is so greatly appreciated!!! Please anyone help!!!

With your new distributor, is the tach still jumping?

Re: Please help!! D16z6 breaks up across all rpm.
ok so i started from square one with the timing, in the picture showing the setting of the mechanical timing the TDC (white mark) is supposed to line up with the plastic pointer? while the cam is in the up position. If thats the case then the white dot is to the right of that pointer, So to fix it now i take the timing belt of and rotate the crank counterclockwise untill it matches the pointer? then reset the cam to the proper position, reinstall timing belt and then time it with a timing light
