Default Please Help! 99 civic si w/ 92 civic si engine

I bought a stolen recovery 99 civic si. I know little about working on cars or engines. One of my "friends" checked the car out with me when I bought it and said it was a minor issue, because it was not running properly at the time. I don't know if the car has more problems other than that or not, although we think that's all. I want to fix up the car but have had a horrible time finding people that know what they are doing. The car has a b16 engine in it from a 1992 civic si. I was told to order a obd2a to obd1 wiring harness by a mechanic I know who works at a local shop. IF someone can help explain this to me it would be helpfull because this guy wants me to buy the harness but he had to call his brother to find out if it is the right one. I know he is comfortable working on honda's (I've seen his) but I kind of feel like he's guessing a little about the harness. If someone can explain this to me I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Wait a minute...

The 92 Si didn't come with a b16, it came with a d16z6 SOHC VTEC engine.

If you have a d16z6 in there, then you have already converted from OBD2 to OBD1. Because your 99 Si is OBD2 and the 92 engine you have in there is OBD1.

Why would your mechanic tell you to buy a harness that you absolutely do not need. Sounds like he doesn't know his head from his ***. LoL. Do not let him touch your car!!

Is the car running?

P.S. It's illegal to put a '92 engine in a '99 vehicle.

'92 Civic SI came with a D16Z6 (SOHC), JDM SiR came with a B16a(DOHC).

Depending on how the swap was done... (I'm asuming you have a B16a)
If they adapted the engine to the car's harness you will need either the 99-00 SI's P2T or an OBD2b-OBD1 harness and run a P30.

If the car was converted to OBD1 or OBD2a you will need to compensate accordingly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 92-95 si come with the D16Z6. If someone told you that it came from a 92-95 si, then you need to do some research and figure where the motor came from, because as of right now, I beleive someone lied to you. The B16, I believe (not 100% sure), was available as both OBD1 and OBD2. Figure this out and I'm sure that you will be able to find some help on h-t. Good luck.

The car is running but not properly. It does not have the power that it should and it seems to hesitate when you give it gas. Idles a little high.

what ECU is in there now?
is the check engine light on?
why does your friend want to convert you to OBD1?

there are OBD0, OBD1, OBD2a and OBD2b versions of the B16a
does it say B16a or B16a2, b16a3?

Then it's not an engine from a 92 Si.

Make sure you have the correct ECU for the engine you have.

To everyone that wants to make stupid comments. If you had someone help you with something you are unfamiliar with before and it did not work out well. Think of this before making your "quotes" to me. At some point in time you will be on the other end of a similar situation.

He says the engine in it is obd1 but the car is obd2 and that the car is looking for sensors/whatever that aren't there. The ecu is the original from the 99 si. I also was wondering what to expect to pay for a 99 si engine new if I had to and also what I could get for my engine via swap. Thanks for the feedback.

The check engine light is not on. The engine is obd1, a b16a and the car is obd2. The car has the original ecu from the 99 si in it.

there are no real "stupid" comments man, only people that are pointing out that what you initially said can't be correct. Trust me, the comments could be 1000 times worse.

An OBD1 engine can run off an OBD2 ECU in an OBD2 car with a little work, but converting to OBD1 would be easiest at this point.
pick up an OBD2b-OBD1 harness and a P30 and you will be fine. (if the wiring was done correctly)

is this a canadian SI or US SI??

the only problem you may have with converting to OBD1 is emissions testing... you will fail if your state has it.

I'm going to get another mechanic to look at it and see what he says. I plan on putting $1900 into it in a week and a half but need to find out what is happening with the engine first and then decide what to do. I would like to know what is a fair price on putting the correct engine in it. Or maybe upgrade it but would want to trade my engine in as a down payment. There are emissions testing where I live. So I would like to know what would my options be to upgrade if I do and what would give me the best performance without making the car wear excessively.

cmillet, flipping out on legit answer is not the way to go about things around here.

you are confusing people trying to help you with people making fun of you.
92-95 USDM civic Si's did not come with a B16a motor, simple fact they were fitted with the D16z6. Now, they have tried to ask you if you have the JDM 92-95 civic SiR motor which is a B16a. we're just here to help bro, no need to get hostile.

either way none of the comments looked stupid to me, please cool down. we just wanna help ya

It is a b16a but I was told it came out of a 92 civic. If it could not have come out of a 92 civic that's ok. This is why I'm trying to get feedback because I don't know what engine type comes from where without looking it up or asking somebody that knows. I'm pretty positive it is a b16a engine, everyone has said that to me that would know. I'm going to have someone look at the engine to find the things that have been brought up. I can't say what car it came out of. I did not pull the engine. The people that gave me the quotes originally are the ones that I did not want to talk to. I am simply asking questions and mostly repeating what has been told to me. I am going to find out what I can and get back on when I have more information.

you will not be able to register that car if it isn't already registered...the dmv will give you a paper to take to emissions and they will check your engine...they won't pass it

best way is to pull that engine and get a new model engine...99 and up so that you can get it registered...i just did emissions couple months ago. how much did you pay for it?...hope you got a good deal because its gonna cost some money to get another engine

I could just about guarentee you that it is a b16a unless God really loves you and decided to give you the b16b. The b16a had a few variants, denoted by numbers at the end of the engine code. What we need to know is:
1.) Is the motor a b16a1, b16a2, or b16a3 (this should be stamped on the block) and
2.) What ECU are you running?

Nobody is making stupid comments or criticizing you. We just wanted to make sure that you were not getting scammed and we needed more information. Help us help you. BTW, Welcome to Honda-tech.
