Please come in a tell me how dumb I am - put headgasket on wrong and spewed oil.
Ok on my b16 I blew a headgasket last week due to reusing old studs. Well after taking my time and replacing all the gaskets in the head and using ARP studs, I put the headgasket on 180 degrees the wrong way. It blew oil out before it even started, thank god my friends where their to spot it. Well I pulled the head back off and cleaned the gasket up and resrayed it with copper spray, and then reinstalled it. After getting it started at 1:30am i can hear an exhaust leak but i think its from the shitty 1 layer exhaust manifold gasket that came with my kit. The engine runs fine and idles well, i didnt drive it or rev it up due to my parents would probably freak out on me for doing so at such an early hour. I let it run for about a minute and SO FAR i see no signs of oil leaking.
Do you guys think I will be ok or was I dumb to even try reusing that gasket?

If it were me, I would have gone out and got a new gasket... even if it was for my D15B7. I don't ever touch copper spray... Honda doesn't use it, so why should I? Since it's already done, you should just see what happens. Monitor the compression and the oil/coolant closely for the first while. If you don't notice any mixing or loss of compression, you'll be fine I guess.

he didnt ask if it was dumb to put the head gasket on the wrong way, that was a mistake he made. hes asking if it was dumb to re-use the gasket.

i think your just taking blind shots and making false assumptions about stuff...
whats wrong with reusing head bolts? and a little advice to you... it helps to go by specs you might want to get a helms. if the headbolts arent torqued to the right spec you'll probably end up replacing that gasket again.
and one more thing... how do you put your head gasket on wrong didn't you line up the dowel pins?

Yea I used copper spray once. **** is horrible to clean off when you have the head off again.
As for the oil spray... sounds like something was waaaaay off. Maybe the head wasn't set right, or you had **** in the head stud holes. I dunno how you put a headgasket on upsidedown.
You should be able to resuse head studs at least once, and the exhaust manifold gasket... provided its not messed up.

I've used a set at least once again. People have said that they are "stretch" bolts but I have never had any problems. I didn't want to press my luck for a third time though.

Re: (supaman111)
Some head bolt such as h22 bolts are tourque to yeald bolts. this means that
when you torque them to spec they stretch. if you try to re use them they become weak because they loose there tensile strength. and the head gasket will leak eventually if you re use it

head bolts stretch because of engine forces, when you mix fuel and air into a confined space, and then ignite it, it releases energy. The energy it creates is more than what a cylinder can handle, so it has to escape somewhere fast, if it can't get out of the head fast enough it will push up or down until it can find an exit.......so after lots of miles of mini assplosions in your engine.....eventually the bolts that hold the head on top of the cylinder block tend to stretch.......man you guys are f'in idiots...The force tells me some of you didn't pay attention in science class....

Re: (Pioneer162)
And I bet it'd be more expensive to get the new head bolts from the dealer than it would be to order some ARP studs. Those bitches don't stretch!
