Default Play in the shifter? Is this normal?

Car: 1999 Civic EX w/B16A3.

I've got GSR shift linkage, with a GSR shifter. When I went to change out something under the car today I noticed that the "joint" that fits inside the shifter is the piece actually touching the ends of the shift linkage. In other words, the shifter itself can slide 1/4" to each side on that joint before hitting the end of the linkage. It seems like this would cause play or is this how it's designed?

It shouldn't play like that. There should be a bushing and spacers there.
