I am speaking from purely my experience but I had a stock D15B7 that had the intake silencing stuff removed and a "there when I bought the car" exhaust which consisted of 2 1/4in piping with some crappy stock replacement muffler. I wooped on a '95 civic si hatch pretty hard. I also beat from like a 10 roll a 1999 civic Si....no bull-ish here. They might have been bad drivers or whatever but my car got up and went.

I dont think it makes no difference when it comes to beating up on Si's. I went from a zspeed full catback to just the piping with stock muffler and couldnt really tell a difference. just in sound. it was way quieter.

well here is my take:
I went from stock ITR header and cat with 2.25" piping and stock muffler to aftermarket header, 2.5" piping, cat, and muffler. The difference was HUGE IMO. Completely night & day

New piping on the OEM stock muffler isn't worth the trouble. I say this because it won't help you to have 2-1/4" piping connecting to the stock muffler with 1-7/8" opening. If you are concerned about sound, take a look at the apexi world sport, rs*r ex-mag, or go with a complete custom setup with an appropriately sized muffler and resonator.

i have 2 1/4 with stock exhaust..its a little slower but totally worth not blowing my ears at 4.5k going 80 on the freeway or 4k going 70.....im in cali too..
if you want a descent stock exhaust get an itr...piping is 2 1/4 i think....but its way bigger than a stock civic's
save it for the track...

i have a b18c1 in my hatch, im running stock eg air box w/ gsr intake arm, 00si stock header, 2.25" custom piping, fake cat, 18" resonator, exhaust cut-out and 00si muffler. i dont really notice a difference w/ a stock muffler. I went with this set-up coz i dont want unwanted attention from cops. the hatch still pulls and looks totally sleeper, oh yeah if i go to the track i just open the cut-out and running open header.

The ES Oval is *relatively* quiet. It is a straight through muffler which by definition are louder than chambered mufflers. So the ES Oval will be louder than most exhausts but probably the quietest of many racing/performance exhausts (apexi n1, magnaflow, etc.).
IMO, straight through mufflers are not the best choice for people who are focusing on daily drivability. They perform noticeably better on the top end than chambered mufflers, but you may lose quite a bit on the low-end to midrange. This is what I noticed when I went from my magnaflow cat-back (straight through) to my current rs*r ex-mag (chambered).
Gotta remember than exhausts sounds are relative. One person's quiet will give the next person a headache.

Just compromise and buy a muffler that actually has baffles (like OEM or a flowmaster) instead of a $200 shiny glorified glasspack. Will still have a decent tone, and not raspy like a straight through design.

damn those are some shitty drivers. You should have been the one getting wooped up on .
I've got an es oval exhaust setup with no cat and a rs*r 4-2-1 header. Its loud as ****.
