Picked up a D16Y8 head from the yard, Need advice *pics
Pulled this from the junk yard today, not many Y8's in there. This one had #2 rod go through the block, but under the valve cover it looked pretty good. But the valves and stuff I have some questions on.
Would you rebuild this head? What can you tell me from the pics? I was gonna pull another head, but i ran out of time, it had alot more varnish on it, and the odo said 190K and a blown head gasket, the head I pulled didnt have a ODO.
I wanna rebuild it on the side, I have a Y8 already, but 170K, and i dont have much room in my apt for a whole block, so I'll just do the top, and then find a Y7 or Y8 bottom and rebuild that later. Im new to this, and I wanna do it all myself. Slow methodical rebuild. Staying N/A for now. I wanna go super cheap, can i just clean them up? DIY 3 angle job, polish the exhaust side, get rid of some casting marks, maybe DIY shave the block.
What do you guys think?

I've been thinking of doing something similar. My junkyard actually has a decent amount of Y8's... And often get fresh ones in. But I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. If you do rebuild it I wouldn't mind seeing how you choose to go about it.

I don't want to replace anything unless I have to, just clean them up to almost good as new. I wanna hone the block and buy new pistons & rings, so I have to keep the cost down. Can I hit the valves with a polishing bit and a dremel? Lightly sand some stuff with some high grit sand paper?

On Craigslist they have some Y8's Y7's on there for a couple hundred, but sometimes they say "slight knocking" Or low miles, changed oil every 3k miles etc. I could get a long block for $200 or so, but with the junk yard i get a 6 month warranty, and if i mess anything up, i can just swap it out for another one. I'm all new to this engine building game. I just to regular maintenance and cleaning.

What about a polishing bit or high grit sand paper on the valves, or whole interior block. Is that a no no?

It it were me I'd replace them. But pull the old ones and get some lapping practice in. And you take a proper honing tool to the cylinder walls. Not sandpaper.
Also, get a new headgasket and head bolts.

DDay 2
So i took everything apart, and found some bad scoring on the crank and rocker assembly.. and a piece of metal inside the the head.
What can I do about the scratches? Cheapest method? Emory cloth with clean that up enough? Light sand it with high grit sand paper? Give it to delta for a regrind? Would that be worth it? It it's a junk cam?
;(
OUCH!
Piston #4 Exhaust valve #2
Exhaust Valves
Second set of exhaust valves
1st set of intake
2nd set of intake
Blown HG?

Nothing, I just wanna get my hands dirty. I will have to replace my engine eventually, and doing to top us easier than the bottom. I wanna learn by doing, milling, valve job, lapping valves, port and polish etc. I wanna make it run as best as I can, do all the work myself to keep busy.

Take it to a machine shop to have them check it, replace valve seals, clean it up, check for warpage, check the valves exhaust/intake opening (sorry haven't had a head rebuild yet to understand the terminology) and be done with. Please do not re-use headgasket. Thank you!

I personally would take that head back to the junk yard and get another one. It threw a rod and the scoring on the camshaft and camshaft journals tells a story of oil starvation and/or debris floating through the oil as the most likely death of the motor, so a full rebuild of the head would be in order if it's even salvageable.
The trick to pulling engine parts from the junk yard is look for severe rear enders, the motor is usually in good shape and the back end collision damage is why the car was scrapped. Some side impact cars can also be a good source of motor parts. The ones that usually aren't good are the no collision damage and the front end collision damage. No damage usually means the motor blew up and front end damage well, self explanatory of why it can be no good for motor parts. Can get lucky sometimes but it's just easier to avoid altogether.
I wouldn't waste my time on that head. Will cost you just to find out if it's even salvageable. I'd rather try my luck on another one and see if it doesn't have the scoring in it. Might have better odds of being within spec.

That head looks like crap. If you're doing this on the cheap, my advice would be to start out with a better head. Y8 heads aren't hard to find, I have two on my shelf due to spun bearings and ruined blocks.

So some of the valves are bent, im gonna try to return it but it doesn't have the marking number on it. Supposedly if it's not marked with the marker I can't return it.

Looks to me like they marked the valve cover in blue. I think the number lets them look up the transaction and it will be for a full head not just a cover.

He should be able to tell em he brought it to a machine shop to be rebuilt and they told him it was a terrible core and he wants to exchange it.
it'd be pretty messed up if they dont take it back. I mean, hes got pics of the valve cover with the code they wrote on it.
