Well I know when I replaced my PCV valve I couldnt find it. I searched on HT, but the few pictures I was able to find were taken down. So while changing my oil today I took a few quick pictures. As its getting warmer and alot of people forget about changing this important maintenence item. Its brief but it should prove helpful. This is for a D16Y8, but I belive most D series should be about the same. On some the PCV valve is considered "in-line". Meaning its not plugged into the box, but its in the hose which is shown in blue.

Shown below is a picture of the PCV valve in its black box. The red is the PCV valve, just above the oil filter threads. The blue is the hose that runs up above the intake manifold shown later.



Again, shown below is another picture just like your looking at it from the ground.



Below is where the PCV valve tube comes throught the intake manifold.



DIY: Take a flat head screwdriver and carefully pry out the PCV valve from the black box***. Go up above the car and carefully pull the hose through the intake manifold and the PCV valve will come out. CAREFULLY take the old on out. Its brittle so please be gentle. Put the new one in the tube. Stick the tube back down the hole so you can reach it while laying on the ground. Stick it back in the black box and your good to go.

*** On some D-Series the PCV valve is "in-line". Meaning you will have to seperate hose on each side of the PCV valve. Simply disconnect the hose from the PCV valve to the black box, and pull the other tube and PCV valve up through the hole.

Nicely done, and just to add this is the same for B series as well, that little oil can in the back holds the PCV, some motors arent on the side like yours some are on the top.

the d16z6 pcv valve is actually a right angle thing and is connected at the point where the line goes through the intake manifold, just an fyi

okay seriously. I have written complex tranny pages, and other ****, but I have NO clue what the hell that "black box o' mystery" does.

Can someone please explain to me what it's for?

its just a baffled box that helps vent crankcase pressure when the car is in vacuum (aka all the time)

Um i didn't know this needed to be maintained. . .what exactly is the purpose of the PCV valve. . and when (mileage) (or whatever) should i look to replace it?

I just replaced my PVC valve the other day. It had 50,000 miles on it, and let me tell you it was perfectly clean I should have just hit it with some brake cleaner but I wanted to break it open to see what was inside. The OEM honda ones are spring loaded if you get an aftermarket piece of **** it's not. You can tell if the PCV valve is still good if you shake it and you hear it rattle, obviously your not going to hear the OEM spring loaded one rattle.

I snapped my PCV valve in my EK (located in the DUMBEST place ever designed on a car, under the intake manifold and above the oil filter.)

1. Jacked up car
2. Removed oil filter
3. Tried prying the PCV off with a screwdriver. Note: Do not use screwdrivers, see #4.
4. It broke into 2 pieces, got mad and used vice grips making it worse.

So now its really stuck in there, yup I am an idiot. Looks like I am will have to spend a few hours tearing apart my intake manifold.

What are my options? At this point I' thinking !@#$ the valve.

Just replaced the PCV valve today as it was time to change my oil. Unfortunately I could only get the low-end one. Still, it fixed my idle (I was running around 500). The pics on this thread really helped! Still, it's a pain to take the old valve off and put the new one on!

What exactly is a PCV valve supposed to look like when it's "bad"? And how does it even get dirty if it's just a vacuum?

My y8 idles around 4/500 when fully warmed up and it sounds bad... I need to change this on my next oil change. They're like what....$20 or so?

The oil/air seperator black box doesn't do the best of jobs. So there is still some oily air going through the PCV valve and into the intake. You can't tell a PCV valve is good or bad by looking at it. You have to remove it and blow through it...each way. It should only flow one way and not the other.

But figuring my car has 178,600 miles and that it's never been changed, I guess I could spend the $20 or so and replace it.

I like where min is on the d16z right on top of the intake manifold. I think its time to check mine I noticed a good bit of oil residue in the intake the other day. Maybe I will just put in a oil catch can and filter instead might help a bit more then just running the pcv system
