my car won't start and I think it's the starter. I always hear people talking about hitting it with a hammer and it will temporarily fix the problem...which part of the starter should I hit, there is a black part and a silver part..

before you start bashing, when you try and turn it on does it just click and nothing else? if so take a breaker bar (easier to get to) and hit it a few times to loosen the teeth up on it. or if its a manual push start it.

Can you here it click when you turn the key?
If so you have power to the solenoid.
If not, then use the hammer on the small round part. That is the solenoid.
If you have power to the solenoid then check your battery connections both at the battery and the starter.
Don't beat the crap out of it, just a couple of light taps or you will break the magnet inside
