Park and D4 indicators at ignition

Park and D4 indicators at ignition
Hi.
I used to have a 98 Civic DX hatch with a JDM B18C , but it was stolen back in the summer of 2005 . So, I am not new to the world of Hondas.
I am new to the world of automatic Hondas, though.
A friend my mine just bought a 99 Civic EX, with an automatic transmission. It seems to drive and shift just fine.
I have a problem, or what I think is a problem, as follows,
When I put the key in the ignition, and turn it to the "ON" position, but have not yet started the motor...
The cluster lights turn on...
For about 2 seconds the P and D4 indicators are bright...
Then the main relay in the passenger-side foot-well clicks...
And the the D4 light goes out, only leaving the P light.
Now, I've heard seen conflicting reports regarding this by searching Honda-Tech and the web.
Some say this is normal. As the D4 light doubles as the transmission error light, it is supposed to turn on with the CEL even if there are not any errors.
However, other reports say that is not normal. They say that this is a caused by a faulty gear shifter position switch underneath the center console.
So... which is the correct answer? I thought I'd pose the question to the experts at Honda-Tech!
BTW, I picked up a second console switch at a junk yard on my way into work today. What should expect when I plug it in... the same or no D4 light?
Thanks a lot,
Adam

Re: Park and D4 indicators at ignition
hmm, I believe they are supposed to turn on?? Not sure though, I have an 00 dx auto and if I remember correctly the d4 and park lights turn on just like you described. I'll check when I get out of class.
