Painting your ES Oval? (or any other muffler)
I want to paint me ES Oval flat black. I already bought the high temp paint (1200 deg). Do I need to rough up the surface first? Or can I just clean the muffler and spray it like that?

Re: Painting your ES Oval? (BrewerHatch)
I painted my Apex RS and heatshield for my manifold at the same time. The muffler I barely prepped by sanding it lightly with 600. The heatshield I scuffed with a wheel. About 5 months later the muffler almost completely chipped off, but yet the header looks like it came coated from the factory. I'm going to throw out a wild guess that the manifold gets much hotter than the muffler does...So that tells me prep work plays a large role.

you also have to take into account the fact that your exaust was out in the elements while your heatsheild for your exaust manifold was kept secure under your hood...at least thats what i believe....

Trust me, under my hood gets just as nasty as my muffler. I don't have A/C in my hatchback which leaves quite a bit of room for **** to fly around, plus all the oil shooting around.

just spray some engine primer on there first. Paint on metal without primer= no sticky. Although I do it all the time and haven't had any problems

if you dont prep it will stick for a while but not forever...you have a better chance of it lasting longer if you prep the surface first...also for max heat resistance there should be baking instructions on the can...but it helps to bake the piece for a couple hours after painting
