if i were to paint my rims of course i would need ot sand them or sandblast them prime them and then paint them, but how much clear would u put on cause it would have to stand up to all the **** on the roads these days, just wondering

When I painted my rims flat black, I used an engine enamel spray paint. For prep work I sanded and used a degreaser to remove any oils. I sprayed a ton of light coats one at a time and used a blow dryer to dry each coat before applying another. I'd say I used at least one can per each wheel. I also didn't use any clear coat and there is not one chip in them since the summer. Been through snow and all.

hmmmm i guess i will do both, i will put tons of light coats and some clear coat for extra protection just in case

yea you dont really have to bury the rims in clear coat

I've never even bothered to put one coat on. I redo them a different color about every year or so anyways.

yah well when i painted my rims i didnt bother sanding them down because basically your painting them your self and no matter what it will turn out to be HOMEMADE
so to be honest with u looking at my set of webs and thinking about sanding down every little corner and edge of it didnt really sound good to me but using a degreaser and alot of washing and drying then primer and paint no need for clear coat unless ur going with the shiny look and your set so doing all the extra sanding i wouldnt recommened also USE NOT CARDS when u spray ur wheels because u will have over spray on your tires us it around the wheel im pretty shure it will come to you when u do it alright hope i helped sorrie long write up

i didnt use any sort of prep.....jus spray over the brake dust ....if there dirty spray em again, if they chip spray em again

When i painted mine flat black I didnt sand or anything... I just cleaned em up real good with paint stripper (cause there was some paint previously on them) and soap and water (dried)... then primered (dont know if that was needed), three or four coats of the black... and then two to three coats of clear coat... didnt make it shiny or anything cause i was goin for a flat look, but im sure it will help a bit w/ durability.

well i sanded all the original clear of the rim till it was dull very dull then took paint stripper to make sure nothing was left, i didn't prime it cause i think the surface was plenty scuffed et cetera and i put a lot of paint on

i will take some more wiht a real digital camera in a few days when i have completed them all only have 2 done right now and sanding the 3rd

I canned a set of 95 GSR rims and I took them to a car wash, sprayed them down w/ aircraft stripper, let'em sit, took a steel wool pad to them and them sprayed them off w/ the pressure washer, it took all of the clear coat off of them. Then used a high temp black paint for a primer and then used a bronze automotive spray paint on them. I then took a satin clear to them and they looked great but when I had the tires taken off of them it chipped the hell out of the rim so I am just going to can then flat black!

I left the lip without any paint on it so when I did take tires off/put tires on the paint wouldnt chip... plus I like my nice little "polished" lip.

How many of you paint them with the tires still on cause spray paint just doesn't hold up enough when you get tires put on or taken. Any suggestions for making a hold up more besides getting them powdercoated?

This is mine from last year. Small chips here and there. No biggie really.

I used dupli color gunmetal and a few coat of the wheel paint clear.
