Default Overheating, then another issue.

Okay, so I was driving around and everything is okay, then after I got off the highway I notice my temperature a little high, so then I get to a stop light, then look at it and it's a little higher, so I went to my friends house just a few blocks away, I'm just letting it idle for a few minutes and I notice it gets even hotter, so now I know this isn't good, so I let it cool off for like 15-20 minutes. I look at the coolant overflow container and theres coolant dripping down the side, and I see coolant on the plastic guard on the bottom side of the bumper. But the coolant is full. In my friends stupidity he decides to open the radiator cap when it's still pretty hot, and coolant goes spewing everywhere. so we waited a few minutes, then hosed down the engine bay, refilled coolant checked everything, started it up, temperature just idleing was good. But then on my way home, I noticed when I tried to accelerate the car would kinda stutter and sputter for a second then would clear up a bit, then I would shift gears, and accelerate and it would start again. So I got home, the temperature hadn't gone up hardly anything so that was good, but now the problem is this sputtering issue. Any idea's as to what this could be? also, what could have caused my car to start overheating like that? my friend said it could be the thermostat?

Thanks for reading

pull your plug wires and see if you got water in the spark plug holes when you sprayed the engine down.

I hope I'm wrong. Sounds like a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
Basically there is a breach in the system. Air is being forced into the coolant system and it has to purge from the overflow.
Check everything thoroughly. Or take it to a mechanic.
Good luck.

If I had a blown head gasket, it would be overheating at idle, correct? and it's not overheating anymore, well at least on the 10 miles drive home from my friends place, it didn't start to get hot. But my main concern now is the stuttering and hesitation when I start accelerating.

Thanks for the input's

Try this to make sure :
on cold engine, open the radiator cap, and start your car, see if the radiator fluid spread out of the radiator or not, if so, maybe there is a crack between the cylinder head and cylinder block, idle position in such a sort time wouldn't make the engine hot enough to overheat, coz there would be much more fluid debit which came from radiator than that out from the crack (or evavorated), but when the car throtled, cylinder head move faster, the hot will raising rapidly, also, that move would give pressure which make fluid more hardly "huge" the cylinder head house, it kicked the fluid back to radiator, and when the radiator cap not on it place, guess what??

sounds like a blown head gasket...under certain conditions you will encounter the hesitation and sputtering with a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head.... the only way your really gonna kno is if you take it to a shop or if you kno someone that is a mechanic and get them to do a cylinder leak down test and pressurize the cylinder...

not all the time will coolant bubble out of the radiator or blow white smoke out the exhaust
