overheating...searched and some questions
Sorry this is so long...just trying to explain it all.
I am having a serious overheating problem with my 92 dx 1.5. Problem just came out of nowhere when driving home last week. It takes a while to overheat....probably 30 miles or more of driving and the heater produces alot of heat. When the heater is on it does help control the temp but still will overheat. Overflow tank did overflow when ran car hard on way home up hill on highway. Coolant system has not been touched in a long time. Car kinda idles like it has a vacuum leak (hardly noticable). Dont see smoke.
What i have done so far:
1. A garage replaced the thermostat which didnt fix the problem.
2. I took out the thermostat and kept it out and flushed the system with waterhose and added premixed coolant.
3. Water put in top of radiator comes out the bottom so i assume the radiator is not bad.
4. New radiator cap
5. top and bottom hose warm with thermostat out
6. Didnt drive long but with thermostat out temp rides around 1/3 way up from cold even idling. So not sure it wont overheat
7. Going to check compression and coolant pressure tomorrow
Questions:
1. Is temp 1/3 way up normal for no thermostat?
2. Will water flowing through the radiator signify radiator not clogged?
3. Will water pump only seize when it no longer works?
4. Is there any other small things i can do to find something simple before i sink some serious money into it?
I think its the water pump or head gasket (jdm d15 here i come)
All help is greatly appreciated

Re: overheating...searched and some questions (cheedo)
Any milky stuff in your coolant/oil?
This is a band-aid to your problem, but if you're low on cash and can't buy a waterpump right now (if that's your next step) you could try using some Water Wetter. It's supposed to help drop temperatures.
I don't know if it would be the water pump because you said both the top & bottom hoses were getting hot, which means water is going through the system.

Water That flows consistantly through the radiator shows that your radiator is not at fault.
Pour enough water into the radiator so that it is full. then pull off a hose and hold it up right so that no water will escape. then have someone turn the crack shaft manually with a rachet turn it 4-5 complete revolutions to see if the water pump is actually flowing. if the water pump siezed then the pump would hardly turn and you would notice the added strain on the timing belt and the motor would have a very hard time running.
You dont have to have water/oil mixture to say you have a blown headgasket.. If your car has overheated severly it could have warped the head. if i were you id remove the head and have it decked and install a fresh gasket

Re: (JDMlyfestyle)
Got a friend with a similar car and you can swap temp guages?
Is it bled properly?
Does the fan enguage?
Does it only overheat on the highway or at a standstill?

I unhooked the top hose to the radiator and cranked the engine by ingition though....water shot out of the hose...plenty of pressure. I would like to narrow it down to that without having to go through all that work for the head.
This engine has been nothing but a problem and if thats what it is it gives me a good reason to just get another engine jdm d15 not that much more over the amount of money i would sink into it getting everything replaced once its all apart. Plus my tranny is still making noise even though i basically replaced everything.

-i thought it was a gauge too cause my gauge light is going out..but my overflow tank did boil over.
-yes it was bled several times but by me that may be a reason....took cap off and ran until all air was out.
-fan does engage
-overheats both on highway and standstill just a little less on highway.
I did notice yesterday that the coolant in the radiator is bubbling while the car is running...but i never saw it do that the whole time i was looking it over the other day.

might have a blown headgasket then.
remember buying a used engine is risky.. u dont know how the person treated it before you bought it.
All it takes is one high overheat and BAM your head is warped and you wont have a good sealing headgasket

i just got a compression test by the mechanic and it came out 115 across all 4 cylinders....since they are all even does that mean my head is fine or should i worry about the low numbers???

Re: (cheedo)
Sounds exactly the same as my brothers hatch. He had a blown headgasket. Bought a jdm d15b vtec from japanesestarmotors.com. Free shipping.
