Default Overheating problem!! Please help!!!

Hello I have a 96 ek hatch with a 99-00 front end and i have a problem. For some weird reason when the car idles for about 5min it starts overheating then when i start driving it goes back to normal temperature its a pretty stock d16y7 and i have no idea wat the problem is. Is my engine bad? So the main problem is that it overheats when idleing. and sometimes the check engine light comes on and when i idle with the check engine light on it doesnt overheat. so what do u guys think the problem is?? also when i floor the gas i get this nasty burning smell coming from the engine.. oil is good and everything.. ur help is very appreciated thanks..

Check your oil for possible blown headgasket. Since you mentioned a bad smell. Make sure there is no Coolant in your oil. If its normal it should just look like oil, vs a whitish brown color of coolant and oil mixed.

When was the last time you changed your thermostat? If you dont recall changing it ever, change it with a new gasket. Does your fan come on? Jump the harness at the thermostat housing with a paper clip to see if it even works (unplug from the fan switch located on the thermostat housing and stick the paper clip making it into a U shape, and stick each end in the plug)

But start off by changing the thermostat if that hasnt been done, if thats not the problem try bleeding the radiator for possible air in the system and replace fan switch if the fan works but doesnt come on after idling for atleast 10 min or longer.

your thermostat isnt working correctly. the reason its overheating when your ideling is because your thermostat isnt allowing coolent to flow thought the block so its not cooling down your engine so its over heating. when you drive the wind from going though the grill cools the engine down enough. when you check engine light go's on, it tells the ecu to bypass the thermostat so it opens it up and your car cools and runs fine. so change your thermostat and if the problem still persists, check the block temp sensors. i think the reason your smelling something is because the coolent is boiling in the block. hope that helps you

Does your fan kick on? If not wire it straight to 12v. If it comes on then its your ECT

If you haven't fixed the problem yet, I'm pretty sure it's a stuck open thermostat.

just searched through thread and this problem exactly happening to my b16a. I've flushed the radiator couple times, check the fan is working and thermostat is working i supposed since it run my fan when overheat. BUT still the the engine's overheating and i realised that the coolant reservoir water level was much more that the maximum level.

what could be my problem?

I agree with: thermostat, fan motor, radiator, cap, and check hoses...

OP, when you mentioned the smell when you gas it, I thought maybe you are running rich...

Wouldn't it be stuck closed? Because I had a CRX with an open thermostat and the thing took forever to warm up. Not the other way around.

But yeah check your thermostat and radiator. Good luck.

Thermostats are designed to fail in the open position.
