Default Overheating problem

I have a 1998 honda civic HX and if I let it idle with the A/C on, the temp needle will go up about 3/4s of the way and the cooling fan will not kick on. When I turn the A/C off, the cooling fan will start and bring it back down to normal operating temperature. If I turn the A/C on again, everything runs fine and the cooling fan kicks on when it needs to so basically it's just the first time. Any ideas?

Could be the thermo switch on the thermostat housing.

I replaced the thermostat. Would a failed thermo switch cause the problem and how much is one going to set me back? It only happens once and then everything works fine.

yes, a failed thermoswitch sounds like the cause of the problem. That set me back around $26 bux+tax

I believe the problem is fixed. I replaced the thermoswitch and let it idle for a while with the A/C on and it didn't overheat. Thanks guys.
