Overheating problem
Coldest day of the year, so far. I started my d15 up and it was idle surging like crazy.. It's not modified at all, which makes this whole thing strange. The coolant warmed up to operating temp. within 15 minutes. The heat didn't work at all. I drove about a mile, then the car started to overheat a little bit. What could have happened? Could I have blown a freeze plug? Could my HG have gone? It was running fine yesterday. I don't get it. I installed a water pump on in a few weeks ago. It's been working fine.

Re: Overheating problem (gsrjeff)
My friend's truck was doing that for a while. We changed out the thermostat and it's back to normal now. Check coolant level, then change your thermostat.

Re: Overheating problem (CycloneBlue_1.6EL)
I changed the thermostat in the last year. I'm not sure how old the radiator cap is. I did see a small puddle of coolant on the ground the other day.. But I haven't seen any leaking since then. What else could it be? COULD it be a leaky or bad freeze plug, if I didn't have the right mix of coolant, and it froze?

Well The same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. I just installed and then took off my turbo and When it got cold my car started surging im like wtf? So i was driving home from work and my Temp said Red hot which it did this for about 2 days i thought my thermostat was just fucked up cause my car wasent puking or any signs of overheating. But as i was driving home my cel light came on and steam started rolling in under the dash i was like **** ****. So the next day i got to thinking maybe there isnt enought Anti-freeze in there key word anti-freeze. turns i out i added about half a bottle of anti-freese and some in the overflow tank. It started circulating and everything. Heater worked again and normal temp on the gage TRY that.

Not that. Remeber I said there was a small puddle of coolant under the car the other day? So it was leaking from somewhere. Either at the headgakset, water pump weep hole, radiator cap or freeze plug, most likely. I doubt it's the water pump because I just replaced it. I didn't smell any antifreeze or see any smoke recently. Is the best thing to just pressure test the collant system?

So... you checked the coolant level in the CAR right? If you see coolant on the ground, it doesn't matter how much and what day or how many days you have seen it, ALWAYS check the level in the overflow and in the rad. Add some more if necessary, then a pressure test wouldn't hurt. If you're leaking from somewhere, a pressure test will usually show you where the leak is coming from because coolant will begin spewing out usually - depending on the size of the leak of course.
