Hey everybody, first post (woot woot):

My friend has a 95 Civic Ex that continues to overheat. I replaced his water pump, thermostat, radiator, and radiator cap. Still it overheats. Even if the fan is hard wired and always on, it overheats. I cannot figure this one out for the life of me. I Back flusehd the motor, Ive even ran it without a thermostat in the housing, it will overheat after 10 minutes of idle.

He drives alot of stop and go california freeway so this happens alot. Any suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED!@

Are you completely sure there are no air pockets in the cooling system?

maybe check the headgasket...... is there any white smoke coming out the exhaust when he steps on it?

or is the overflow bottle slowly filling up but never going back down?

Well it overheats and then the overflow bottle fills up and spills over eventually, and that is where all the coolant is being lost. The exhaust looks ok, I am not completely satisfied with the head gasket that is in there, but there is no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil... I will double check the exhaust and get back to you guys.

Are there any sensors I need to be worrying about, or any controls possibly related to this in the IACV? If this were a B16 I'd probably have already solved it :-D

its your head gasket. same thing happened to me. the bottle will fill up more and more but never go down. i never saw white smoke or had oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil but i replaced the head gasket and problem solved.

Ya I agree. There is a slight amount of white-ish smoke, which I originally thought was blue-ish so I advanced the timing. It runs sluggish on top end, and has all the beginning signs of head gasket failure... Thanks for the help guys...

one way to find out too is to pull the plugs and check inside where the plug sits to see if you see any coolant in there...headgasket could be blown internally, thus not mixing the oil with the coolant or showing the "usual" signs of a bad headgasket...that's whats up with my B7 too

It's the headgasket. Same thing happened to me 2 years ago.

my cars doing the exact same thing. If its my headgasket then that really blows, i guess ill buy a d16y8 one when i replace it, since they are metal correct? thinner gasket?

should i buy one OEM from Honda? and are there any writeups on replacing one?

yeah, get the oem one from honda, its the MLS gasket. nice upgrade for the d16z6's. or if u plan on boost or any kind of power adder, try a cometic head gasket, around 100$ shipped and with these, u can get the copper seals for the sleeves.

the oem y8 and z6 head gaskets are identical despite what youve read on here. in the past the y8 was a 2 layer but no more its a 3 layer now just like the z6 and both are metal. go with the y8 though cause its cheaper. if you need a write up look at the mini me one its basicly the same.

for some heads...honda recommends a "special" headgasket to use insted...ie for the b7 head, if it blows a headgasket, you're "supposed" to get a "special" headgasket from Honda that's designed specifically for the situation...don't ask me why, but when i called, that's what they told me Not sure if the part numbers are the same (z6,y8)

is should be either the headgasket or u cracked the head... but u should get the head checked out by a machine shop....

Most likely your head gasket. Same thing happened to my friend during a road trip.
