this overheating is a mystery to me, i'm trying to help a friend diagnose...

motor:
b18c
aebs sleeved, new headgasket, seals, waterpump, etc (10,000 miles ago)

problem:

the temperature guage shoots up when given throttle, it sometimes shoots up just when sitting in the parking lots and given slight throttle

our "diagnosis":

we have already replaced the following:
-OEM thermostat
-OEM coolant temperature sensor
-OEM coolant temperature sending unit
-OEM fan switch

radiator is full, i'm STUMPED!

help please!

did you bleed the system. if so make sure the fan is working. also do a comp test to make sure the head gasket is ok.

is it possibe you put the thermostat in wrong? also def check if the fan is working properly

Are you really overheating or is the needle just jumping around?

I have some input if that is the case

i think you're on the right track...no boiling water or any "smells" of overheating, just an erratic needle

When I had this problem it was caused by a poor engine ground connection.


My mechanic saw sparks from the engine ground near the trans., it was pooly grounded. So I cleaned up the connection and every thing was fine.

I have an engine swap and in the process the upper engine ground (on the valve cover) was not reinstalled. So the only ground on the engine was the one on the trans. and it was poorly connected.

So check that your engine is properly grounded.

My guess is that with the engine not grounded properly. Some of the current that should be grounded was messing with the temp gauge on the block.
