overheating issues

Ok, i got up this morning and took my kid to my sisters and started to drive to work. got about 5 min and noticed my heater was still blowin cold air. i looked at my temp guage and it was pegging. i shut of the engine and started it right back up and the heater started blowing hot air and the emp guage went down. then at lunch i went to pick him up then i went home let the car sit for half an hour went to drop him off at daycare. on my way back to work i noticed it was pegging again so i turned the heat on and it didnt do anything. so i shut it off again and started it and left the heat on and it started to go down. both upper and lower hoses are hot and have pressure. so that makes me think the thermostat is opening and closing, but i may be wrong, any one plezzze help. the fill jug was empty, and the radiator did have some coolant in it. i have put 3000 miles on it since the rebuild with no problems.

boil your thermostat to see if its opening and go from there. it only takes about 15-30 minutes.

sounds like you may have a blockage in your heater core....pull your spark plugs too and take a look at them to make sure no coolant is getting in there..

I actually did a search, as I'm having the same issues this guy is, only everything in my cooling system is new, except for the thermostat and temp sending unit.

My heater core started leaking about 1.5 years go, and it's replaced... The engine and radiator just got overhauled also.

I don't get heat when I turn it on (always has been jacked though, don't know why...) and my engine swears it is overheating.

Ideas?

There's a "valve" (it has a wire cable attached to it) on one of your heater hoses that opens up and allows hot coolant into or out of the heater core. If that malfunctions that could cause a problem with getting any heat from your heater.

That valve was replaced (and not cheaply) when the engine was overhauled, as well. I verified that it was replaced, as it looked brand new after the engine was put in. Other ideas? Can air get caught that low in the system? Thanks!

Nick
