Default Overheating

96 Civic EX original engine 262k miles.

Car's check engine light came on, car seemed to be low on power. As I was driving the temp gauge was fine for about 5 mins and then started going to hot.

I turned on the heater didn't seem to pull the temp down. I pulled over.

Popped the hood and it looks like the overflow was boiling over. Car was too hot to open the radiator.

No visible leaks, hoses seemed ok.

Recent things done, water pump about 7 months ago, thermostat about 5 months ago, fan was working and spinning. Radiator about 1 and 1/2 years old.

When the car was cool, I opened the radiator cap, the rubber seal was torn probably due to pressure (the cap was fairly new before).

No real smoke out the exhaust when restarted, checked under the oil cap not milky residue.

Car is running rough, but was pretty rough before overheat.

I am thinking prob headgasket was going before and this was the last straw.

Opinions?

So test for headgasket issues. I've seen you answer plenty of these questions yourself so I know you already know what you should do next.

I know Marc, strange no tell tale signs, I was waiting for the white smoke none, and when I opened the radiator cap no visible mixing, this morning I added coolant and the gauge stayed a hair below half etc.

And the cel was on, I ran for codes no pending codes listed?

My hatch blew a headgasket. Never smoked. Never mixed coolant but burned it. Ran rough. Towards the end of the engines life we started getting codes for misfiring.

When did you know it was the final straw?

Can a bad headgasket cause low compression? I know one of my cyl is low.

Bad compression in one of the cylinders on the hatch.

Did you replace the headgasket if so did it help the compression or did you swap?

We swapped in a JDM D15b. Didn't want to be bothered with fixing the old engine with 195k on it.
