Re: over heating
Thermostat could be stuck closed.
Warm engine up and see if all coolant lines get warm. Put heater on hot, and check those lines also. If they do, then you at least know that coolant is flowing.
When you add coolant, be sure to add a 50/50 mixture. Too rich on antifreeze will cause your car to overheat. I would also check your mixture with the a floating tool to make sure it's good.
When is the last time you flushed your cooling system?

Re: over heating
How old is your water pump? Check for an external leak. However, a seal could have released internally and the pump efficiency went out the window.
-Change thermostat
-Flush system with Prestone radiator flush.
-Refill with fresh 50/50 mix
-Check or replace water pump
Cooling systems are fairly easy. If it's not an internal engine issue, than it should be relatively easy to diagnose.
