OPEN Header Exhaust ; Is it just another Noise maker or for Power; You Decide?
One night I came home and I was tried of course. I went to the left side of the porch as I came up the stairs where the two benchs were. Then I took off my shoes because I was out all day. I live on a hill by the way so I can See my old High School and the shoppping centers and Wal-mart and 7-11 and so forth. Out of no where from Denny's a car started up its engine. Its sounded kind of Funny at first. I already knew what that person had done to there car but MAn when it took off, it was so Anoying. I was like OPEN Header I see. It got me thinking though, Is that some form of trying to make more power or Just another noisey *** car who is trying too hard to have Power. Oh yeah it was a EF by the way. Now you decide on what you think?

Top-end power is all it will help you lose a lot of low-end torque with open header.

you obviously have never done it. MAAD top end power. but it sounds like an unmuffled kawasaki!!!! (at least my b16a did on the way to the exhaust shop)
*edit* it's hard to get going though, ZERO bottom end.

Wrong
It's actually better if you have a fairly high compression ratio.

Open header sounds like ****. Can't stand it, unless its on a built V8!

In most cases an open aftermarket or stock header will create a lot of noise and very little power, sometimes even losses in fat parts of the powerband. Drag cars, and race cars that run open headers have specially made headers with tuned lengths to produce power. Depending on the size of the engine the lengths vary.

i dont know...bro ran a 16.1 header on everything...unbolted the cat hence open header...
15.7 broke the 16 sec barrier...

All this loosing torque and horsepower with open exhaust is bullshit according to every dyno chart I have ever seen with open exhaust. You do loose a little bit of torque below 4000 rpm but with a high reving engine you should never be that low. I got faster with my exhaust off. Not to mention it saves weight.

Three years ago I tried open header for the first time. Lost 0.226 seconds in the quarter mile by going open header - from 13.142 to 12.916. Of course some of that was from losing the 47 lbs. from the header back... but my trap speed went from 101.64 to 104.23 mph.
As for the dyno - it rocketed from 191.2 whp / 134.2 wtor to 200.8 whp / 140.8 wtor with no changes. A little bit of a/f tuning yielded 204.8 whp / 144.1 wtor. Never lost ANYTHING from 1800 to 9700rpm.
Now after signifigant weigh reduction (1980 lbs with me in it in the staging lanes) she runs the time in my sig.

This is not meant to be too critical of those saying that open header is useless, but I am tired of hearing "You need backpressure, you'll lose torque... etc." This is simply not true. If your engine needs backpressure to make torque than something else is not right further up the line. Alot of engines just need a couple degrees advance when running open header to realize the extra power. Saying you need your full exhaust to make torque is like putting a band-aid on cancer.
