Icon2 One side of the timing belt loose?

i have a 1992 civic hatchback with a d16z6 motor, mileage unknown. bought the car 2 months ago, so far i replaced the thermostat,
both coolant hoses, and most of the heater lines. the timing belt and water pump was next until this happened. now i guess i have
to do it. lol! luckily i have another vehicle to use until i fix this one.

the other week i found out that my water pump has gone bad due to finding coolant on the timing belt and also a puddle under the car.
anyway i let the car sit for a week (got the parts on order. oem water pump, gates timing belt (blue one) and gates tensioner, and spring)
i start the car and for a couple seconds the motor runs rough or so i thought. i look at the timing belt and the side that faces the front of the
car is flapping around while the water pump side looks like how it should. i quickly turn off the car. i than feel the tension of the timing belt
and the one side has little tension compared to the water pump side. what causes this? a bad tensioner? i will be replacing the above mentioned
items as it should be here on Monday. any other things to look out for that would cause this?

looks like this

Did you follow proper timing belt tension adjustment procedure when you installed it?

[edit] Scratch that, dumb question. If you have slack, you obviously didn't.

My water pump has failed because of a leak. I didn't change anything as of yet. Parts are on order. Just was wondering what would cause the one side to go limp. Lol!

If you futzed with it, and rotated it the wrong direction, that could cause the tensioner to fall out of adjustment. Given that the water pumped failed, if it jerked the belt harshly, that could also pull the tensioner out of adjustment. Or the water pump's bearing could have failed, giving extra slack in the belt.

Or literally anything else in the system could be messed up. We can't know until you strip it down and start working on it.

Pretty sure the water pump bearing was the culprit. For the couple months that I owned the car it was whining. At first I thought it was the alternator bearing. Seeing that the water pump is leaking coolant I can now confirm the WP. Wouldn't a failed WP bearing cause the timing belt to slack on that side and not the tensioner side?

Just to make things clear, I never undid anything yet. Still waiting on parts to come in. I live in Hawaii, parts are cheaper especially oem parts.

Bring back from the dead. I have a b20v turbo dohc but same exact problem. The guy I bought the car from redid the whole car and so I have no clue why it’s like this. Any help great appreciated. It’s basically a show car so if I need to replace a tentionor then I might as well get a whole water pump and timing kit I guess. But I’m not sure why it’s like that. Thanks
