You will lose tons of gas due to evaporation. I also found it unsettling to smell gas all the time. Im sure there is a safety factor involved.
A place like Pepboys or Autozone should carry one for your car that will be quite inexpensive.

I drove around for a few days without one. Didn't notice any performance loss, but it did seem like gas went a little bit faster.

On my car if the gas cap is not tighten to where it clicks a few times, a code will be thrown. At least that is what it says on the gas cap.

When I worked at a gas station a few years ago, there was this beat to **** celica that would come in with no cap. I told them and they said they knew about it and the next time they came in, there was a rag stuff in it.
