Oil Pan seal bolt break and leak!
Alright, I am an idiot who is pissed! ! Well today I changed my transmission fluid. I noticed my oil pan was leaking, alot of oil was settling on the oil pan. My fill bolt was on securely and a lil drop was settling just there below it. All of the oil was coming from the back part of the pan (the part that faces the rear of the car) and looked like was slowly leaking down, alot of gunk and mess around the bolts area and stuff. So i thought hmm lets get these bolts a little tighter.
So I then took out my wrench and started tightning bolts, got all kinda secure(seemed really loose) and then I broke one!( DUMASS ME! you can flame me for this but it wont help I have alread flamed myself). So now there is just a screw with threads there. The nut and a piece of bolt broke off.
So Main points: My oil pan seems to be leaking and I broke a bolt. Should I get a new bolt and nut? Where would I get these at because today is Sunday and I have to go to work tuesday. Could I do it myself or should I just take it to the dealership Monday and have them look at the oil pan and what not.
Thanks for any responeses will be greatly happy with any help.
oh yeah looks like tranny fluid is coming out of the axle where it touches the transmission, just got that cv boot on that side changed about 3 months ago.

A lot of stuff going on here. You should just be able to get a new bolt from the dealer, or ACE of somewhere similar if you know the thread and size of the bolt (if you can get it out). As far as the oil drain plug bolt, I chose to get a "quick-drain" system for about $12, so that way you don't ever have to take the bolt out ever again.

By the way, you can get the quick drain system from Autozone and probably any other similar store.

sorry if I confused you. It was my oil pan seal bolt(one of the bolts that holds in the oil pan).

Ok, I get it now, especially after reading your post again. Sorry, [college] graduation is coming, I worked 12 hours today, and a bunch of other crap that is going on. In any event, if you have the tools to get the bolt out, then by all means , do it yourself and just go buy a new one. It is up to you. Good luck in any event.

You don't think that you can get the bolt out yourself? I would try to do that first. If there is enough thread left, you could try to double-thread it to get it out or try a lock-wrench. I would try this first so that you can save yourself the money. If you take it to the dealer, it will probably be at least $50 + parts and oil change (based on hourly rates, I haven't taken my car to them in so long it is hard to remember how much they charge per hour). That is the best I can offer though.

Have you considered that the FILTER was leaking? On my d16y8 block there is a channel for oil to run down just below the filter, so when you change it, all the oil runs down the back of the block and past the drain plug so you get minimal mess when changing the filter. Is this where your oil was running down from? Or just all over the place around where the pan meets the block? Personally I'd check the tightness of your oil filter.

Don't you understand what a torque wrench is?
The gasket is probably leaking.

Actually Honda has admitted that theier oil drains are not the best quality. Most likely your problem is not the plug but the actual threads on the bolt hole. I know a parts manager at honda and the dealership actually pays him to retrofit oilpans for exactly this problem. Go talk to your local dealership and see what they say.

He's not talking about the drain hole. The oil is leaking from above the pan.
And Honda pans are fine. All you have to do is use a NEW crush washer every time, and torque the drain bolt down to 31 lb-ft every time - no more, no less.
Unfortunately, too many people screw this up. Places like Jiffy Lube and Grease Monkey frequently strip out the threads in the pan from overtightening and not changing the crush washer. I see cars come into Honda Express Service at my dealership every day that people have taken elsewhere for oil changes, and all too often, the drain bolt is leaking.

Re: Oil Pan seal bolt break and leak! (Targa250R)
My dad thinks it is the gasket on the oil pan or the pan isnt on there right. I bought this car from a guy who put a new d16z6 in with lower mileage with his brother. I was thinking when I saw the mess around the oil pan(where it seals onto the engine) that they didnt tighten the bolts properly. Tomorrow is Monday and I am wondering should I take it to a mechanic that deals specifically with imports or the Honda dealership????? Any more thoughts or suggestions?
