Default Oil light flashing

So I have a 92 Honda civic with a d16y8 in it and the other day I was driving it and my oil light came on when I stopped and started to flash a lil but it went off when I took off and would only come back on when I stopped and the car had oil in it what could this be?

Oil pressure decreases when engine RPM decreases. So when you're sitting at a stop, or at idle, your oil pressure drops. Apparently its dropping enough to set off the idiot light. You need to have the pressure checked with a gauge to know exactly what the pressure is, both at idle and at higher RPM.

You hook up an oil pressure gauge right after the pump.

If your car has high mileage, I'm betting this is oil pressure loss due to increased clearance in the bearings.

OP, did you even bother checking how much oil you have in the car? That is the absolute first thing you should do whenever that light comes on. Turn over, turn the car off immediately, and check your oil level. It's a dummy light - if it comes on, your motor is going to be very damaged, very quickly.

Yes I have had this happen before and it was the oil pressure sensor above the oil filter that was bad. It COULD be your problem.

In my case, the oil light would flicker, and upon inspection, the oil pressure sensor was leaking oil through its connector.

This is actually fairly common for Civics with D motors. The sensor is cheap from an auto parts store.

I will warn you - the end of the sensor can snap off in the block if it's badly corroded or if you just aren't careful with removal/install.

screen on the pickup in the oil pan could also be partially clogged. you'd need to pull the pan off to check. first thing- check pressure.

1. Check oil level
2. check sensor condition, replace if necessary (like stated above, it's cheap)
3. check for dents/concave surface on oil pan, it can cause clearance problems with the pickup

3.5 PRESSURE TEST (can go anywhere above here)

4. check for clogged pickup (this is also the time to assess any seals under there just in case/ and check for any particles in your oil, seeing as you'll need to drain to check this step)
5. if none of the above is wrong...you get to tear into your engine...oil pump, bearings....at this point i suggest reading your FSM in-depth.

if I left anything out, i'm sure it'll be corrected by anyone else on here with a grain of sense and extensive knowledge.(and thanks for any additions/corrections)
