Default Overheating issue please help :)

So i was driving my civic home today and i realized at a stop light that my car was getting above the half way point on the temp gauge. Thinking that it would maybe go down when i started driving i proceeded home....it got hotter I pulled over at a gas station and thought maybe the fan didnt turn on so i poped the hood and saw that it was on. I touched that radiator cap and it wasnt hot so i didnt the dumb thing and opened it and got fluid everywhere Im guessing that my thermostat has went bad but what do you think?

ty in advance

I think at the very least you should try and replace the thermostat.

Curious. When was the last time the timing belt/water pump was replaced?

You're lucky, you can get some pretty nasty burns that way. If you have a blown headgasket especially that cap can be under a hell of a lot of pressure.

Try a new thermostat and cap and go from there (oem not aftermarket junk, I've had some many issues with aftermarket thermostats it's not even funny)

I would also do a compression test on it. Maybe do that first actually.
