Default Oil Leak - source?

Hi everyone,
Looking for opinions/confirmation of my suspicion about the source of this oil leak. It is a drip every 10 - 15 sec while idling (and probably more while running) from driver side of the oil pan and little less from near transmission. I cleaned out the engine bay and surrounding areas good and let the engine idle for 10 minutes before taking these pictures.Sorry about the large size. The vehicle is '99 Civic HX CVT around 237 K under its belt. I am thinking it is the oil pan but also suspect something else (as was point out in a previous post regarding another problem I was troubleshooting) -

Will appreciate your inputs.... planning to tackle oil pan gasket over the weekend sometime. TIA.

Leak on driver side

Next to the transmission

I'd say the rear main seal.

Should I try something like stop leak? Is it worth the shot?

I don't think stop leak will work. I would go ahead a change oil pan gasket just to have it done. Then u will have a better idea were the leaks are coming from if it absent stopped with new gasket change.

Doesn't look like a rear main leak. It should come from the drain hole in the bottom of the clutch cover. If the oil is getting past the flywheel, there would have to be some pretty major clutch slipping and burning from the amount of oil in there.

I am thinking oil pan gasket, or somewhere higher up on the engine.

Ok if you think it might be coming from a higher spot only things I can think of doing is look an see if valve cover is leaking on the back, check vtec solenoid, dizzy, see if anything is leaking on top on tranny ( clean with carb or brake cleaner if nothing can be seen I'm dead set on oil pan gasket, also have u checked the torque on oil pan bolts? If no don't go wrenching on bolts find the torque specs for them.

Will check these out later today.

Also, there was a write up on changing rear main seal but the pictures are no longer available. https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-...asket-1980272/ Can someone suggest an alternative?

PS: Just out of curiosity - where is 'Former_user' previously known as RonJT....

If you are replacing the oil pan gasket, don't waste your time unless you buy oem.

Almost certainly running down from above. Remove timing cover and look for leaks from the cam seal and front crank seal. VTEC solenoids can leak badly, but only when the engine is running (and in some cases, only when VTEC is engaged).
The oil pan gasket should be the last thing you consider replacing, after confirming no leaks from anywhere above. I thought the aluminum oil pans do not use a gasket, only sealant.

He did say it was leaking while at idle, so as long as oil pump is working, oil is running to everything that has a supply for oil. So it could be a vtec solenoid. Have one on mine do this before replacing.

Not having luck finding OEM gasket on preliminary effort (rockauto / Amz). Could you suggest an outlet?

So I did eyeball the engine from top to see if there was leak from above but I intend to check again today to make sure (now that I have put around 50 miles since). But initially, it all seems to be from below and it came up pretty quickly (like 10 min of idling). Will update with what I find.

What engine do you have? Also if I'm not mistaken the oil pan will have like a round gasket that sits in a grove on oil pan. That's similar to a d16y8. Then I used that 3m weather strip adhesive.

If you think stopleak is gonna save you thousands go right ahead. Just be prepared for some bad karma if it doesn't.

Besides the $$$, I was hoping to save on the effort and further screw up while attempting the formidable task of rear main seal replacement.

Pic#1 my bet is on front crank seal and pic 2 if its between the trans and engine=rear main seal with my second guess distributor o ring or vtec solenoid yeah agreed pretty notorious to leak. I would not waste my money on any snake oil(stop leak)

Finally was able to get to it this weekend and looked carefully. There was leak coming from top. Seems from distributor and/ or v tech housing. Changed the distributor o- ring since I had that at hand and will keep an eye for further leaks on that side.
The oil leak from driver side of engine is much more elusive and can't really see. The oil dipstick holder (metal pipe) is loose and occasionally pops out when I am checking oil. Could that be a reason? And how do I tighten it?
