Oil leak from flywheel cover area :::HELP:::
I have a 92 hatch with a z6
So far I found 3 leaks and I fixed 3 of them. One was coming from the valve cover gasket, o-ring on dizzy and oil pan gasket. It is no longer leaking from those places and its still leaking from somewhere else. I noticed oil coming from the flywheel cover plate. The cover isnt wet at all, its coming from behind it. It kinda wet around the driver side axle area but if it was leaking from the axle, woulnd't it be dripping tranny fluid? I'm leaking clean oil because i just changed the oil yesterday. I'm running out of ideas of where it could be leaking...anyone have any ideas??? I need help!! Thanks

So i guess it the rear main seal then since all of you are saying the same thing. How do I go about fixing it? Do I have to take the tranny off and take it apart or what? Thanks for your help guys!

Not that hard....well for me it isn't. Anyways yes you have to remove the tranny. Put it aside since the rear main seal is on the engine. Once you remove the tranny, take the clutch & flywheel off. Then you will have acess to the rear main seal. The seal is on the cover itself. remove two bolts and 2 dowel pins(careful not to lose them. their behind the cover). Then use a oil sealer tool and pull the oil seal off the cover. Reinstall is the opposite.

o ok - so the only hard part is just taking the tranny off rite. so i have to buy a special tool to take the oil seal off? could i find it at napa or autozone?

i just have to make sure not to scratch anything rite? is there a front main too? because i was takin a closer look at things and i found another leak on the other side by the timing belt cover. maybe that seal is bad too....thanks for your help guys.

You can take a small flat screwdriver and bend it near the tip, it then forms a small hook like thingy, or get the actual tool for pulling seals which looks the same.

Before you undertake that work, you better make darn sure it is the rear main oil seal. You mentioned the oil comes from behind the flywheel cover. THere is a hole in this cover to allow leaking oil out. Is there a drip of oil there? If not, it may not be the rear main seal. You'll see once the flywheel cover is off. When my dizzy o-ring leaked, it also went behind the flywheel cover. You may have left over oil from the dizzy o-ring. Anyway, good luck fixing all your seals.

Thanks for the concern DP. Yeah when i replaced the o-ring on the dizz - i pressure washed the engine again to get all the old oil off and i even jacked up my car to get all the oil build up off from under the motor/tranny. When I took off my oil pan to replace the gasket/screws and nuts, i took off the flywheel cover as well and cleaned it along with the oil pan (just so i can see leaks a lil easier) There is oil dripping out of that lil hole at the bottom of the flywheel cover so just like you said, its the main seal. Then i guess the other seal is leaking too because there is oil coming from the botom of the timing belt cover.
Yeah thanks for the luck. Thankfully i have a friend that knows how to do it and is willing to help me out. I'm just gonna pull the whole motor out so i can get a better look at things and clean a lil better. While im at it i guess ill get new mounts. anyone have any recomandations of what ones to get? now i can prolly but my new clutch in that i had for about a year. thanks again guys...i appreciate your help

I had the crank seal fixed a while back and there's still an oil droplet right below the crank shaft on the oil pan. I plan on getting an impact wrench to take out that crankshaft bolt so I can check things out.

my friends was leaking like this and i suspected rear main as well... i checked his oil level and it was full... checked tranny fluid... NONE... turns out the input shaft bearing broke allowing all the tranny fluid to leak into the clutch area mocking a rear main seal leak... i thought it was odd... never seen a honda tranny go out like that
