oil catch can.....whats that?

i have no clue what an oil catch can does?
any help in clueing me in?

just a brief description.. it catches oil coming coming out of the head where it connects to the intake manifold so it does not put the oil back into the engine.. have you ever cleaned out or seen an intake manifold, its coated in oil.. do search for more info tho..
