Oil Burning Problem on my Z6
Well ive encountered a problem with my single cam after i rebuilt the motor maby someone can shed some light on the subject.
When i change the oil and top it off with oil it smokes like crazy for about a week but after that it wont smoke at all, and ive noticed once it gets to a certian oil level it stops doing it. anyone know what this problem could be its got me stumped i thought it was a leaky valve seal but i would think if that was it, it would smoke all the time till it ran out of oil.
any help is definatly appreciated

i usually about 3 3/4 quarts and then it burns it down to about the middle of the 2 holes on the dipstick then it stops

typically valve stem seals show up on cold starts when the oil has time to seep down onto the valve stems. you could have a pvc issue(positive crank vent)..did you gap all of your oil rings????? did you use new pistons and or did you clean all of your oil relief holes in your old ones?/??? ant vertical scoring on any of your cylinder walls???
just a few possibilities...................

Re: Oil Burning Problem on my Z6 (woolydotmatrix)
well we ripped apart the block and replace the piston rings that were fried....haha but actually i had done that and rehoned the walls, the head was sent out and milled down and cleaned out very well basically to brand new condition, it sometimes happens when it runs at low rpms for a while then you open it up not to WOT but around that area then it starts to smoke but only periodically

How long ago did your rebuild the engine? Since you got the cylinder walls honed there should be a crosshatch pattern for oil to sit in while the engine is being broken in, once the motor gets worked in the crosshatch's will be worn away and wont hold any oil in them to burn while combustion is going on. It's common to have a little oil burning when you first rebuild the engine because of crosshatching.
That's my guess.
That's my guess.

the motor was completed in june or so so its fully broken in ive put about 3k on it since the rebuild

Just put enough oil in it to be in the middle between the two holes on the dipstick and you won't have to worry about it anymore. You're putting too much oil in there, which means too much oil pressure resulting in blow-by.

WTF?! over filling will not creat too much oil pressure, lol. Overfilling will LOWER oil pressure if anything. The crank will aerate the oil which will cavatate the oil pump. It could also throw too much oil at the pistions, causing oil to go past the rings.
but yes, only fill it to the middle of the holes. like someone said above, that is the ideal oil level.
