Default OEM Valve Cover Gasket

Hey Guys,

I've recently started doing work to my Civic (And cars, in general) that i purchased back in November. I purchased a new valve cover gasket to install since it seemed as though around the edges/upper sides of the head.

I noticed two things that didn't seem right:

1) Burnt oil smell coming from inside the Valve cover and head as well as what looked like burnt oil on some parts of the cam itself. It was very thick.

2) The valve cover gasket, although the right part (referenced the number) didn't fit 100%. It was a little long than would fit on the side closer to the firewall. I'm hoping that it's supposed to be like that and shrinks a bit, but it probably doesn't.

I'm just hoping this engine holds up for several more months until I can purchase a new engine and rebuild it completely, hopefully learning a lot more.

Thanks,

Derek

Well, I wasn't too sure and ended up buying a new gasket kit from a different dealership. This one fits perfectly.

On another note, I ordered the new kit from Majestic Honda and shipped it cost less than just buying the valve cover gasket from my dealership. The dude at the parts counter also said Honda doesn't sell gasket sets. What an *******. Last time I'm buying from him.

I agree.. I bought my new window regulator from them a few months ago. It was around $50. The local dealership wanted something around $168 or so.

But I did learn a valuable lesson today. NEVER use the extensions on compression gauge. It unscrewed leaving the extension in. I loctite'd it back together and it broke the hose off . Broke a pair of craftsman extra long needle nose pliers trying to twist it out. So, I resorted to drilling 2 shallow holes, 2 rock solid Allen wrenches, and a pair of vice grips.

Lol, I do what I can. If I were to take it to the shop, it would've cost a shitload to remove one small piece.

Now, I've got to buy a new compression gauge... to finish testing, but the one cylinder that I was able to test had a nice 200psi on a D16, so I can't complain. Next job is to replace the oil pan gasket, clutch and throwout bearing.. I love working on engines, but tranny's and components different story.
