Octane rating question (how high in a b16a)
hey guys there is a gas station by my house that sells 99 and 101 octane rated gas (race gas) from the pump, Just wondering if I would see any gains if I ran this in my J-spec b16a
Not every day just for a track day or a dyno day ?
Is there any danger in running that high in a 10.4/1 compression ?
thanks

No danger, I don't get close to redline if I'm not running octane above 92... What is the gas station called, that's crazy...

No danger in running it, but just a waste of money. The engine was designed to run on 93 octane (i think, i dont have a b16) so you should use 93 octane.
The exceptions to this are if you are gonna go the drag strip or something, and you want to turn up the boost, or advance your time a bit. This could cause detonation with the 93 octane.
Save your money and use the regular 93 octane stuff.
BTW: I'm from the twin cities as well, which gas station sells that gas, and about how much does it cost. I found a list of the local gas stations that sell the good stuff.

I use 91 octane usually... sometimes 94... I don't see the point putting that expensive gas(anything above 92) unless your motor's built w/high CR or in some way..
I hit red line at least twice a day with 91 octane.. no prob...

Re: Octane rating question (hoya_10fintec)
its the gas station over by central high school I think its called "tracy 1 Stop" but im not 100% 99 octane is like 2 bucks a gallon 101 is like 250 (If I remember correctl)
So if I were to run this on the track it wouldnt give me any advantage ? (Unless I advance it a bit ? )
I wasnt planing on runing it every day ..... just track days

Yep, pretty much, unless the computer is sensing detonation and retarding the timing, which i doubt it is, unless you already advanced the timing.
Short answer, unless you modify the engine to require a higher octane gasoline, it is useless to use it.

Exactly right. Honda specifies a minimum of 91 octane for all DOHC VTEC engines; race fuel is just a big waste of money on a stock or lightly modded engine.

Re: Octane rating question (Targa250R)
I pumped half a tank of 100 octane ($5.25/gal here in cali) half tank 91 octane, and poured NOS octane booster in there too.... If anything, it hurt my 1/4 mile time

um no i run open header with small baffle.. my car that i ran it in was very loud i could tell , so any little change in tone i hear it. but with a quiet exhaust or anything with some sort of resonator you prob wouldnt notice as much. but my car wasnt stock
