Default OBD2a motor to OBD2b harness questions

Hey honda tech, I'm posting this for my brother. He bought a 96 civic EX, fully converted to an 99-00 SI, except for the B16. This means, interior, dash, dash harness, fuel pump, cluster, doors, front end, ecu and engine harness. The motor is a D16y8, orig. motor for the car. The guy he bought it from had a b16 in it and blew the motor, so he swapped the d16 back in and sold the car. My brother wants to get this car smog legal. We live in california. Now, the problem. The D16y8 is a OBD2a motor, the engine harness is from a B16 and so is the ecu (P2T). And the Dash harness is from a B16 too or SI, all OBD2b. My brother went out and bought the correct engine harness, un-cut and his ecu. We plugged everything in, and realized the green plug from the dash harness wouldn't plug into his ecu. Therefore, the car wouldn't start, and the fuel pump wouldn't prime. We called our local Honda specialty shop and asked if there was a special jumper harness, and they told us "no". So, the only way his car will run right now, is if we run the b16 engine harness and the P2T ecu, but it runs like crap. The CEL is on. I have told my brother to go to a shop and have them read the codes for him, but he hasn't done this yet. He is strapped for cash. I honestly think the best bet for him is to just save for a B16. And thats what he is doing. But I am wondering if there is something that we can do in the mean time to get his car running better. The car has a hard time starting and doesn't seem to run proper. And I'm sure thats due to the ECU controlling a single cam when its looking to control a dohc. So I'm hoping to get some responses from people that have run into this problem before or who know a possible solution. Our other alternative is to contact Rywire to see if they can make a custom harness. But if some one out there already has one, let me know. I can't do everything for my brother, but he's learning. He is 18 and in school right now for automotive. But he hasn't started on electrical yet. And i'm horrible with electrical, except for just the regular plug and play with the engine harness. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

If your car has the 99-00 dash and cabin harness, you must use a 99-00 engine harness. You can easily just use the 99-00 Si engine harness and put it onto the d16y8 engine. You will need to find a 99-00 (obd2b) p2t ecu, or you can use a 96-98 p2t ecu and an obd2b to obd2a jumper harness..

my brother is using a 99-00 P2t ecu with the 99-00 si engine harness. so can he use a 96-98 P2t ecu with d16y8 engine? And the motor will run properly with the jumper?

The car should run decent either way.. The only difference with the newer ECU is that it looks for a fuel tank pressure sensor and evap canister pressure.

cause right now, the car runs like crap with the 99-00 P2T ecu and 99-00 engine harness and dash harness with the d16. So if he swaps ecu's for the 96-98 P2T and gets the jumper harness, the motor should run better? And thanks for your help by the way.

you are going to have swap out the harness with the green plug, there is no easy solutions to this.

If you have converted to an OBD2B 99-00 civic cabin harness, you would need to use a OBD2B engine harness and OBD2B ECU. The engine itself will only matter for what sensors will be plug and play. The distributor plug may be different. The IACV may be different, the O2 sensor location may be different.

Everything is hooked up and running. just the car doesn't seem to run properly. My brother just needs to get the codes checked. it hits vtec and doesn't stutter, but when we both drive it, you could just tell that its not running the way it should. I'm just assuming that its the ecu. cause its looking to run a dohc but instead its running a sohc. and thanks for your help. your answer was what i was afraid of. I was hoping for my brothers sake, that they would have a conversion harness for the green plug.
