Default obd2, obd1 engine

hey guys. i have a question, you probably already seen this question lots of times but i can't find it on the faqs and i haven't really seen anyone post this question. well for starters i have a 98 civic ex that has the d16y8 but unfortunately me engine overheated and then after a week or so it broke down on me. and i don't really have the cash to buy the same engine cause the lowest that i have seen it is for 600-700 bucks. but someone sells me a d15b vtec engine obd1 for only 100 bucks and told me that it is the same and that i only need to change my factory intake manifold and my distributor to the d15 and that i should be ok. and i wanted to know if this is a good idea or if this will not work. any commentss is very appreciated .

Im not so sure about the intake or the distributor thing but i know that you need a harness conversion to OBD1 if you do get it.

yeah i was thinking about that but that's what the intake manifold swap was for, i suppose he thinks that almost all the sensors are in the manifold. also i was just gonna swap my sensors in the head, like the temp sensors and that stuff.

No not at all. All of the sensors are not on the manifold you still got the 02 sensor on the exhaust manifold and the ECT on the block, and the v tech on the head. the ones on the intake are like MAP, IAC/Throttle position. you would need the harness from the OBD1 motor and get a body side OBD1 conversion harness no manifold swap needed you can use the one from the D15

ok thanks but tell me in your opinion is it even worth getting the d15 or should i just wait till i have the money to get the y8??? cause all of that wiring harness thing gets me bummed out. also i thought that since these engine are very alike i could just swap the sensors or i'm i wrong in doing that??

i dont think the sesnsors will just change over to that motor, and if you really are not up for it and dont want to deal with the harness swap and wiring i would just save up for the Y8. If it was me i would cuz its just a direct drop in no mods to ur harness.

ive done that kind of swap before...well not a obd1 d15 into an obd2 chassis (ej8)

but i have done a b16a3 (obd1) into an ej8 (which is the exact same car as yours...mine is 99-00 but i dont know about you) you can use the wiring harness from your d16y8 and wire up the d15 with it, im pretty sure all you need to do after that is put the obd2 alternator (from the d16y8) on to the d15, same with the injectors, dizzy and ps pump (im pretty sure they will bolt up) and get a ecu jumper harness and run it with a p28 and it should work.

let me know if you come into any problems, and i hope this helps.

it depends on what connectors youre talking about, cuz im pretty sure you can use the wiring harness from the d16y8.

i used a d16y8 harness for my b16a3 swap.

yeah ive seen that too...i did it with my b16a3, since i didnt have an obd2 b series alternator, i had to splice the plug into the harness, same thing with the obd1 dizzy, i had to fabricate myself a conversion harness for the dizzy.

but since the OP is dealing with the same series block, im pretty sure he can use the alternator, dizzy, injectors, and p/s pump from the d16y8.

actually, i KNOW he can definately atleast use the injectors.

the b16 + 5 speed conversion was great after being stuck with a d16y8 automatic for a year...ive only had the b16 for like a month and now im craving more power...its not fast enough for me anymore.

sorry but i have to correct u on that. N/a = dd. Boost gets u broke down. Prime example. DSM +boost=pos Honda + boost = breaks alot
And u need to remember we are only fwd 400= no traction

But thats just how i feel
