Default OBD-1 and 2?

I always read about people talking about there engine being obd-1 and other times it being obd-2. What does this mean and what is the difference between the difference between the two?

Like 40 different CEL codes.....

OBD-2's came on 96+ cars, where obd-1 were 92-95.

It stands for On Board Diagnostics
88-91 OBD0
92-95 OBD1
96-up OBD2
