o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
My 92 honda HB has a d16y8 engine that has no front or rear o2 sensors on it. my check engine light is on, however i can still rev up to red line, so it appears that i am not in limp mode. does a 92 civic in limp mode limit rpm's, or just adjust the timing/mixture?
If i am indeed in limp mode, i need a wiring diagram to get o2 sensors hooked up from scatch..
any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

if you were in limp mode it would stall out and be real corky.
do you have a header on? no o2 bungs?
one o2 sensor is for mixture and one is for o2 heat. i believe the top one is the one that will throw a code.........
but.........what code do you have first of alllll?

i do have a header on it, with o2 bung's....the car seems very sluggish and had a front o2 sensor. i wanted to check if i was in limp, so i disconnected the front on as well as a test - and it behaves exactly the same. the rear o2 sensor hole has a spark-plug in it now...
my check engine light is on, but i don't 4 sure what for...i would imagine it's the o2 sensor. i have a new o2 sensor, and may change out the existing one today to see if perhaps the front one is bad.
or....my chipped volvo xc70 turbo may just have me spoiled on performance, and the car is just slow! lol...
but the civic is fully gutted and very light - so i'm thinking it should have more pep than it currently has....

what is the easiest way for me to find that code out?
i'm somewhat new to the honda world...i'm used to pre-1973 vehicles
where you don't need to mess with ecu's...emissions...yada, yada...

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
i think the CEL comes on with the secondary O2 sensor. thats why when people put defoulers in a car without a catalytic converter, they put it on the second sensor. plus, since your car is an eg, its OBD1, and OBD1 cars had the sensor sitting in the midpipe.
anyways, the easiest way to check what code your have for your CEL, is to count how many times your CEL light flashes. the number of times it flashes equals a specific code. how your get your CEL to flash is beyond my knowledge, sorry.

ahh...thanks. this is helpful info. i will hook up my new o2 sensor to the rear bung where the sparkplug is filling the hole, and see if my CEL goes off.
thanks for you help!

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
i'll have to double check - however i believe i have a p28 ecu odb1
i did put my new o2 sensor in the REAR bung, and that turned my CEL light off. however now i don't have an active front o2 sensor, so i'm wondering what my mixture is up to...or if there is still performance in that i am not getting out that motor.
it was a motor swap from an integra that was done prior to me buying the car.

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
i'll have to check with the paperwork that came with the car owner. he wrote up the details.
thanks for the o2 info..that worked slick!
i was trying to figure out if i build up the d16y8 if there are interchangable parts with a b16 or b18 if i do a future engine swap. for instance, if i can use my d16 headers and cold air intake or if a greddy turbo kit would fit both a d16 and b18 that would be great so i could just bolt them on the engine swap down the road....

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
For the record, OBD1 ECUs only look for a primary O2 sensor, if its bad or not there the ECU runs in open loop mode and the engine runs rich. This will destroy a catalytic converter rather quickly. OBD2 ECUs look for both a primary and a secondary O2 sensor. All the secondary O2 sensor does is monitor the emissions coming out of the catalytic converter. Its basically there to let the smog tech know if the catalytic converter is good or bad, nothing more, doesn't figure into the air/fuel ratio at all.

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
so i am a bit confused now as to what the best course of action for me is...
I got my CEL light to go off back hooking up my o2 sensor in the back, and just leaving an unplugged o2 sensor in the front for a plug.
so for performance, is it better for me to:
1. remove both o2's
2. remove both o2's and cat
3. remove cat and have front o2
4. only have front o2 and no cat
5. only have front o2 and keep cat....
?

Re: o2 sensors on 92 civic HB
thanks....i am thinking that my original o2 sensor was bad and that was causing the cel light to come on...i am going to take out the original on the header side, and see if the cel is still off, and if so - gut the cat or put a high-flow in there.
or leave remove the cat and just put a section of pipe where it used to be so i can put the cat back in come emissions testing time....
thanks again! ;-)
