Default noticed white smoke today out the exhaust

on my way to work today i got on the car and when i shifted, i notice some white looking smoke came out the exhaust. so i got on it again and the same thing happened.

i noticed that smoke was coming from under my hood. so i came to a stop and checked it out. i looked under the car and noticed there was smoke by the header flange. it turned out that the black box thing, next to the oil filter came lose and oil is leaking from there onto the exhaust pipe.

could that cause the white smoke to come out the exhuast when i shift?

motor is a jdm gsr
4-1 header
skunk2 IM
kenji chipped p28
msd sci kit

just did a compression test a couple of days ago and it was 210 across. oil pressure guage reads good.

what do you think?

yes oil can leak into the exhaust that way its happened to me it only takes a drop to creat smoke clean it up and it should stop with some time (and that black thing is called an oil catch can)

oh and most modified motors blow out smoke at high revs.. are you running a cat?

no cat...just a resonator.

i just checked it real quick and i know there is oil leaking right by the header flange. i was thinking the smoke would be because of the leak on the exhuast becuase this is the first time i've seen that happened and then there just happens to be an oil leak right by the header flange.

excess fuel is white smoke. burning oil is darkish bluish colored smoke.

i thought excess fuel was black smoke and coolant burning was white?

unburnt gas is white , burning coolant is a heavy heavy white sweet smelling smoke, burning oil is dark blue colored.

it wasn't a heavy white smoke....it was light white.

i do have a walbro 255lph fuel pump cause for when i use my zex kit. i just set my fuel pressure at 42psi though. i was thinking it was due to the fuel also, but i also thought the fuel was black smoke. or is the black smoke unburnt fuel?

do you think its anything serious?

could it also have anything to do with my oil catch can coming off and leaking oil onto the header?

this is smoke from the oil buring off the header, oil may not have leaked into it but the smoke could have been going underneeth the car and thats what you saw....worry about this if it continues for more then 2-3 days

if the smoke was indeed coming from the tailpipe
since you have no cat and you were in vtec most likely this is unburn fuel, carbon blow-off* we all have seen when people rev out the motor.

<FONT SIZE="1">*made up term by me to describe when extra carbon in the exhaust gets forced out by high revs</FONT>

if you are too rich(fuel) it will smoke black. I had a 76 blazer i put a throttle body on and had it tuned too rich and it was black smoke same happens whenever you dump too much fuel to anything.

^^^ throttle body on a 76 blazer?

the white "smoke" is unburnt fuel because you have no cat, it is very common. don't worry about it.

check the compression, maybe you headgasket is going. Are you sure it wasn't coolant on the catchcan? Maybe leaking from the headgasket.

White smoke = colant
Black smoke = rich
Blue smoke = oil

i just did a compression test.

its 210 across the board.

there isn't a headgasket leak unless the oil catch can coming off would let coolant leak out somehow.

i know at night time smoke comes out the exhaust cause my friends sees it. i just never knew what color it was cause its night time. i'm not losing coolant and my car isn't overheating.

the kenji ecu tends to make cars run rich also and thats what i'm using. i'll do another compression test tonight, but i doubt the numbers will change.

what happens if you don't have an oil catch can on?

a going headgasket would immediatly overheat the car.

yeah so what color is the exhaust, is it only when you go into vtec, or constantly. Because people are killing each other over something.

The third stage is a control system that monitors the exhaust stream, and uses this information to control the fuel injection system. There is an oxygen sensor mounted upstream of the catalytic converter, meaning it is closer to the engine than the converter is. This sensor tells the engine computer how much oxygen is in the exhaust. The engine computer can increase or decrease the amount of oxygen in the exhaust by adjusting the air-to-fuel ratio. This control scheme allows the engine computer to make sure that the engine is running at close to the stoichiometric point, and also to make sure that there is enough oxygen in the exhaust to allow the oxidization catalyst to burn the unburned hydrocarbons and CO. </TD></TR></TABLE>
